One of the relations is heading to trinity. They got a handout from IT about what you need on you PC before they let you connect to the network. Was wondering has anyone got their laptop "veted" by IT and what was required.

    Windows XP pro..

You then bring it to one of the ISS clinics and they butcher it for two hours with all sorts weird nerdy stuff and antivirus runs that will bore you to tears..

You can apply for a clinic on the ISS website afaik: http://www.tcd.ie/ISS/

Serenity will probably know more than me. Though watch out, he foams at the mouth when he gets excited..

So if a machine is set up with its wifi card, AVG/ZA/Usual AntiSPyware and all your apps, they'll just scan it, and its ok they'll give you a logon to the wifi network. From what I read, they don't let you hook into the wired network only the wifi? My cousin is in the Trinity Halls, does this require anything special?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

No there's a wired network. Friend of mine hooked up to it in halls and I used to plug mine in in the libraries.

Okay I'm probably looking like an idiot now to the more techie heads on this but afaik they set up another user account on your laptop and they put their own antivirus software onto it as well as completely reconfiguring it to fit the network.
Well that was the impression I got they were doing when I connected up. They even made me remove my norton.

as per the current setup, which may change...

All new student laptops/pc's are put on the trinity AD domain, this means you login to the tcd network when u login, and your local login details to the pc are seperate. This means using AD pushes ISS can basically run anything on your machine, its used for doing windows updates and updates to the antivirus systems and so on.

the labs are pretty painless for wired, wireless can be more iffy.............

Do many people here take in their laptop?
I mean there seems plenty of computers there already so there wouldn't be much hassle in getting access to a pc, i presume.
The wireless is handy alright but carrying in a laptop on top of books everyday could be annoying.

Yeah I wouldn't often. It's cumbersome. I don't drag books around either. They're at home and when I'm in college I use the ones in the library. There's always pc's to be had. The only time I bring in my laptop is if I'd have notes on it and need it in the library while studying. Or the odd time I'd bring it into my lab and save time by typing the results straight into it.

G'wan Crash ye mad yoke, throw in the very subtle "I do CS and my PC has bigger balls than yours" line there :).

    Lightweight my arse :D.

actually my laptop is in fact smaller than everyone except for Ians, but everyone knows laptop size is inversely proportional to penis size.

Ok cool, sound likes its a half decent network so. If they remove Norton, then they must know what they are doing. So if it needs XP Pro on it will they do that aswell? No point me going near it if they do everything on it. Its for web access back in the halls. Probably wired access is all thats needed. I doubt it will be brought into college very much at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

well they do the clinics out in halls, as regards getting the xp pro update, well you'd have to talk to them how that goes, they may want you to do it yourself as its probally quite time consuming......best to ask them :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

Yeah I don't have a laptop, but if I did I don't know if I would bring it down there, I think they have a clause that if they **** your machine up at one of their clinics, then well "tough ****," and considering all the complicated procedures that they seemingly need to go through on your probably expensive piece of hardware just to connect to the internet, why bother?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

Emmm well for alot of people its a painless enough process, they add ye to AD n do a few lil things n yer done....

And in fairness, it is sensibile on their behalf, ensures all boxes in col are up to date and have av n what not...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

Claim your running Linux they give you all the settings and just ask for your MAC address.

generally they will want to see it running, they have previously had linux 'clinics'...where they ask do u know what ur doing n give u the ip.....

Because otherwise you have to pay for access (from your own machine obviously). All that security is a good thing even if you don't realise it. In the real world every decent company does the same thing, so you might aswell get used to it.

The AV they give is for life as well. When I got my laptop set up in 2004 they said I'd get free updates as long as i had the software installed.

Unfortuntaley had to reformat it and lost it but since then got a new laptop and discovered AVG so i'm happy!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

    What AV is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

ummm i can't remember which one they are using these days, Anyway the av updates will only work on the tcd lan iirc, they use a local network share.....

Finally got around to looking at the link posted earlier. Pretty much every things on that. I didn't have access to it it earlier. Thx for the info.

I'm going to have to buy XP Pro (WTF is wrong with XP Home?) to get access. But does this mean that when I get Pro I'll have to re-install everything on my laptop again? Like documents and music and stuff? Is getting Pro like starting your computer all over again from scratch? Or does Pro just take the place of Home and everything is left alone?

This is ridiculous, I can't even string together a sentence about computers coherently. If anyone manages to understand what I'm trying to ask here, please please write back in a language that you don't have to be a computer genius to understand. Because as you may have guessed, I'm not one :o

Yeah u might have to format your computer. I only know from upgrading from a previous version like 2000 or Windows Me.

Maybe its different for upgrading home-pro.
Can't believe its like 100E for the upgrade. I might just get it off someone.

I think XP Pro has networking features that XP Home doesn't have that you would need. As far as I know there is an upgrade, and in theory it shouldn't **** up your machine, but this is MS, so well.......
Seriously though, I don't think there would be a problem upgrading. You shouldn't lose your music and documents and stuff, but maybe you should backup it just in case...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

I mean I have had some really bad **** happen when I installed XP Pro, one time I got infected with a virus during the install procedure, last time I ever install with the ethernet jack in....

XP home doesn't work with AD(how the network login stuff works in tcd)....

And in general xp home to xp pro upgrade shouldn't involve you loosing any applications....

as for your music/films n whatever else regardless of what you do those shouldn't be touched aslong as you avoid any format option.

Well if you can get a legal copy, (and I assume they check it) cheaper please let us know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

Why would they check if it is a legal copy or not, and how could they tell anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

for one thing i'm not sure if the illegal copies would work with the windows update verification thing they brought in recently...... and you need to have the latest patches to be left on the network :)

That and its illegal, obviously. Colleges (like companies) get hefty fines for illegal software on their network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

as part of agreeing to any college AUP you'd be making an undertaking not to use illegal software...transferring the onus to the user......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

Well that sucks ass, not that it really makes a difference for me, if I was getting a laptop I would just get a iBook. So much less bs to deal with. Anyway, are there not cracks and workarounds for the windows update?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

No i never said an illegal copy i meant just using the legit xp pro cd on my laptop. Your allowed use it twice afaik. If this is still illegal i don't care they've no way of finding out.

I think he was talking to me when he said it was an unsuitable topic. Oh well, if MS wants to go out of their way to make it easier for malevolent peoples to take over machines, who am I to argue.

I'm sure your licence for your pc only allows you to use it with one machine, not 2.... and it could cause later problems for you... you remember that windows activation thingy? could come back to bite you...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

I'm sure that Microsoft started getting a load of hits from the same IP range from "invalid" activations then they come down on Trinity IT. No point going after a student with no money is there?

Anyway the point is you need a valid copy of XP Pro so you can activate it and get the updates from MS. Thats the long and short of it. This is not really the place for OS debates.

Actually the odds are they will query the college as to what is causing it, and whom, and what action the college will take against the person....

Where was the OS debate? its actually all surprisingly relevent to tcd in this thread....

anybody interested in finding out about a group discount for the xp pro upgrade? TCD recommend you buy from micromail.com (student discount) but maybe we can get more money off if a few of us buy them?

its a joke that im automatically charged 60e for the network point in my room and then have to get a 100e upgrade to use it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

60e for network point in the room? huh? this some sorta halls thing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 danmcn

im in the goldsmith, its included in the "energy and utilities" charge (230e per semester!). Apparently i can claim it back at the end of the year but its still annoying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

uhh i don't remember ever seeing anything about that when i was in goldsmith but that was a few years ago anyway.........

anyway 60e for a year of internet in your room isn't bad at all, i'd stop moaning tbh, the ammount of man hours that goes into providing the service to the student residencies i'm sure costs more than 60e per person per year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,626 ✭✭✭Stargal

It's for all rooms in which internet access is available (ie everywhere except a bit of Rubrics afaik). It's automatically worked into the cost of your room for the year, whether you use it or not.

Of course, technically you don't "have" to get the €100 upgrade, in theory you could just run Linux or similar. I wouldn't really consider it a "joke". If the software you happen to have chosen to use and learned to operate also happens to be an extortionally expensive operating system, it's hardly anyone elses fault/problem, least of all the College.
