    Hi

I signed up for this free banking offer about 2 years ago when it was launched first without as much advertisement as now .The catch at the time i signed up was that you had to keep an average balance of above 1000 euro per month to qualify .I dont know if its the same this time.

But i would recommond it definitely, save about 30 euro per quarter on transaction fees, direct debit ,atm withdrawals ,cheques etc(they mount up fairly quickly) .They only charge you 5 euro per direct debit set up on the account and thats it,never a charge again

Get my statement every couple of months ,itemizes the fees you should be paying and then a message "you are exempt from these charges """ ....lovely

Its amazing how many sneeky charges the other banks hit you with
    Best banking offer around

To sum it up .. you cant go wrong ...great offer to be grabbed

Cheers, will have to look into the average balance thing a bit more, but in fairness it does sound good considering how much the likes of BOI and Ulster bank are charging

as far as i know National Irish Bank only require you to be in the black with them and they will offer free bank current account. you are only charged for the quarter if you go into the red

Correct. I opened a current account with NIB about 8 or 9 years ago and have a direct debit paid monthly from the account and have never ever paid fees. The account was always in credit of course.

Make sure you tell them that it is a "Freebank" account you want to open. I know they are advertising this type of account in the press at the moment.

A funny little story from the time I opened the account. Their slogan at that time was something like "Your money 24/7". I got the cash card in the post and with it I was allowed to withdraw up to a max. of £50..........................per week. after complaining they increased it to £80 per week. Its all sorted now though. I think the figure is about €450 per day

What's TSB's on line banking like? This is the only reason I stay with AIB. There on line banking is superb (only thing that is with them tbh. Don't get me started about their fees).

I would give them 6.5 out of ten for their (PermanentTSB) on-line banking. Not brilliant but not too bad.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Hmm_Messiah

I use TSBs open24 for my current account and credit card, find it very useful, I save the statements to excel files etc, can pay any bill once its set up, they have great telephone service idf there are any problems.

I pay everything onlline at this stage

And my credit union also allows you track payments etc online

now all I need is more money :(

I've never paid charges with TSB except on my last staement, haven't got around to asking why, think a Direct Debit made me overdrawn at one stage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,115 ✭✭✭Pacifico

TSB's online banking is good. What would be nice is the ability to lodge money into any bank account on the spot like it is with BOI.

Would be handy for buying on Boards :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,210 ✭✭✭Tazz T

People may be interested in knowing that although it isn't advertised (don't know why) that PermTSB free banking account includes no fees when withdrawing overseas at ATMS in the eurozone. I confirmed this before travelling to Greece recently. You will pay for withdrawals in the UK however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,121 ✭✭✭andrew1977

I use TSB online banking as well and find it fine, no problem at all
No charges on that account either,AIB hit you with a maintenance fee on your online account i think

I would be the first to moan if i had a problem with TSB but so far so good,no complaints on any service they offer, they even send out a replacement cheque book without having to ring up and ask .
TSB cant be faulted in my opinion

TSB's banking is usable now that they have credit card statements/balances up there. (About 2 years overdue).

Definitely have to get that free banking thing (pity it's pretty impossible for me to keep a €1,000 balance in there at the moment though).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 905 ✭✭✭m8

Is this for new customers only as I am with TSB and I'm sure they charge me ?

You don't need a €1000 balance with the new Switch account.

Thinking about switching to TSB also, but was wondering in terms of your credit card account do they show you each item as they are billed (like BOI) or if it just the facility of paying your credit card when you receive your statement by post (Ulster Bank)??

It's like the BOI version - stuff shows up as its billed.... Very handy....

    Paddy

PS I'd recommend TSB to anyone, banked with them for over 20 years (since I was 7!) - Free current account banking (based on a min balance) has been in place since the mid-90's, just they didn't advertise.......

I was with TSB about 10 years ago - it was nice to get free bank drafts etc.
But had to leave them cos BOI atms wouldnt accept their cards and TSB atms were scarce.

What is the availability of TSB compatible ATMs nowadays?

    “Roll it back”

PermTSB cards work with pretty much any ATM in Ireland these days. Compatability issues are long gone (I remember them too).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

I have a current a/c with BOI and a credit card account with them, and another joint current a/c with them.
How easy is it to change to TSB and how easy is it to pay into my BOI c/c account and the joint current account?
Would I be better off changing to a TSB c/c, would I have to pay another €40 levy? (I only use my c/c when in credit so interest rates are no issue)

You're like a mirror of me a few months back, the current a/c, the credit card and the joint account with Bank of Ireland, but they went ape on charges.....I changed the credit card to Ulster Bank for the 9 months interest free (I had a big balance) and changed the current account to TSB....couldn't be easier, I rang the number, organised to visit a branch, set up a new account using statements, proof of address etc...and they did the rest, direct debits, salary and everything. You organise a specific changeover date and that's it. You can pay into any other accounts (c/c or joint) online, it takes 3 working days or whatever.....not sure about your credit card, it doesn't sound like you have an issue there though, to be honest.

AFAIK, no bank charges extra for withdrawing in the Eurozone.

Just so you know, PTSB are SH*TE.

    Eg:
Their online banking site used to work with firefox. It doesn't now (God knows why). But they don't tell you it doesn't work with firefox.

So you log in 3 times, "Maybe theres something wrong with my keyboard- i'll try again". Nope. Now its disabled.

So you call up and the woman doesn't tell you it doesn't work with firefox.
You go though the process again.

You call up again and get a woman who knows "how to make suggestions to change your browser (only IE) to make it work better". Only she doesn't know what shes doing, only how to open several menus and explains it painfully slow and you've to wait 10 mins for the punch line to figure out exactly what she is on about.

Eg. They don't do bank giros!!!!! WTF

Eg. You go in there to get something done to your account. They feck it up. You've to go in there AGAIN the next week to get it done properly.

It clearly says on their site that IE and netscape are the supported browsers, however I use firefox on the site and have never had a problem just that the graphics are a bit messed up.

More than likely its your own setup which is preventing you from getting onto the site.

Netscape?? Who uses that nowadays? I was told on the phone firefox wasn't supported. Have you used it in the last 3 with Firefox?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭brian_ire

Yep was just on it there. If you get locked out of any internet banking site it's nothing to do with the browser your using, its simply a case your entering in the incorrect details.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,338 ✭✭✭aphex™

Nah I was entering the correct details because i used them to get through to somebody on their Telephone banking system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭brian_ire

I'd say your trouble lies with the internet password your using then. Because if you can get through to their telephone banking that means that your registration number and your PAC code aren't the problem. If memory serves me right they give you a 4 digit number for your first internet password, and then you change it to a word yourself which you use.

Seems odd tho that you can't get on, i'd definitely throw the FireFox theory out the window even if they said it to you. Unless your security settings are too high on FireFox!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,115 ✭✭✭Pacifico

Aphex what are you talking about. Open24 is fully supported by any Firefox bulid i've ever used.

It's not TSB's fault you cant use you keyboard

Hi Pacifico, they told me it wasn't working with firefox anymore on the telephone on friday.

I can use my keyboard, I use the same password to log on to something else too.

Anyway, was just trying to reset my password there. It isn't working, i get as far as accepting the terms then changing my password then theres an error. Going to have to call them AGAIN on Monday. That will be the 3rd time.

I'm just trying to show people that its not at all rosy being a PTSB customer. They're just as ****e as the other banks.

I understand that your fustrated that you cannot seem to use TSB's internet banking, but having worked in IT for a while, i'm really sorry to burst your bubble here..... but your entering in incorrect details, or you just not able to follow instructions.

I hope all goes while for you when you ring the third time!

I am yes. However a number of other banks also have free banking offers. I'm just saying this service isn't the best. Just to give people a balanced view. Things can get hyped up in this forum a bit. It is a product like any other and I'm giving feedback of my experience.

Brian_ire: I'm a bit of a techie and I never encounter problems that I can't fix on my own pc. I'm sure my account has been ****ed up on their systems. (Happened to a friend on o2 last month too). Sometimes databases get corrupted etc.

Like I'm resetting the password and it says my email is "invalid" and I can't complete the process (trying several diff emails even). The people on the phone are more of a hinderance than a help.

As i said earlier they don't do Bank Giros. Isn't that strange too.

    What other banks?

What banks have better service? I found them all to be pretty dire.

If it works through IE with the same details then the details are fine. Someone else is telling you it works for them in FF. So all thats left is your settings.

I'm in IT and have to remember dozens of passwords and similar, across multiple systems all the time. I've never had a problem with forums, and other online accounts. However my online college seems to lock me out all the time. Their IT is always telling me its my fault. Granted occasionally it was. However most of the time its them reseting passwords, or having network problems. Drives me nuts.

"bit of a techie" :D

what the fcuk do you know about bank databases? you cant even log in to an idiot-proof site

and im sure you and your friends make up all sorts of excuses like this all the time, to explain why nothing seems to work for yous, unless someone holds your hand thru each and every step
Like I'm resetting the password and it says my email is "invalid" and I can't complete the process (trying several diff emails even). The people on the phone are more of a hinderance than a help.

that email error is probably a general error for that page. your entering somthing else incorrect (typical noob, doesnt try anything else ) your old password is 4 numbers long, and your new password has to be 6-8 lower case letters only

if firefox doesnt work for you, then your pc is bolloxed too because the site does support it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,338 ✭✭✭aphex™

Hi Bounty, i've reported your abusive post so presumably you're going to be banned now hopefully. I could have called people names after snide posts a while ago but didn't. If you can't restrain yourself then get lost.

I am would call myself a techie, i usually dual boot linux on this pc. I don't know what you wanted me to try instead of my email addresses in the form there. My new password is the correct length. Business systems do get messed up from time to time. This sometimes happens when upgrading. They're upgrading the open24 site for users with a disability. Problems get escalated all the time in IT departments.

Anyway. People here seem to want me to slip up. Its not happening. I've done everything correctly. You've pulled things off topic. The point here is i've to make 3 calls to get it sorted. The bank has other problems too which i've mentioned. If I am doing something wrong the page should tell me and I'd fix it. IT people often build ambiguity into their systems.

Called o2 recently and they had to totally reset an account to get roaming enabled even though it was already enabled... **** happens.

Problems get escalated all the time in IT departments.

    Good.....but...
IT people often build ambiguity into their systems.

    ...classic :D

With respect, aphex, there are two problems here. The TSB support muppets are obviously not listening to you and are just following their standard script. I have worked at many levels of tech support myself and have seen situations like this where the end user gets understandably frustrated. The support people should should know it is not really that difficult for them to reset your username/password details so you can log in. Stick with one support person until you get sorted, don't let them fob you off.

The second problem, and don't take offence at this, is that from what I am reading, you seem to be trying to do the same thing over and over again. Is there another PC you can try it at (work, college?). This will rule out any kind of bogey setup on your side.

But the main point is this can happen with any of the banks, or any company with an IT system for that matter.

Ive just asked them to give me a ring back on monday. A few questions first, i dont get paid straight into my bank account as i used to have a problem with bounching checkes for my workplace, do you think that this will reflect badly on me when trying to set this up? Also im a postgrad student, so not working fulltime yet, do you think ill still be able to get a credit card... these are very random questions i really should ask them tomorrow lol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 978 ✭✭✭bounty

....I don't know what you wanted me to try instead of my email addresses in the form there. My new password is the correct length....

again you prove my point that you can't follow simple instructions, length is not the only constrain on the password  go back and re-read my post and stop wasting everyone's time
I am would call myself a techie, i usually dual boot linux on this pc.

hail oh techie master of the universe, you clearly are a higher form of life and your wisdom obviously extends to every facet of banking IT systems :p ... pity you still cant work a keyboard :D

I'm used to BOI and AIB where I get no customer service and get charged to the hilt for the privledge.

Back to the online banking side of things, B365 is great with the money transfer, but wouldnt mind no fees. Might just open a TSB a/c and keep b365 for the transfers. So new a/c is free - and once im in credit in boi a/c charges can't be too high.

Have been using NIB's freebank account (though it is not branded a current account) since january (Changed my mortgage over to them, they do a great deal on their tracker rate as well!!) and the only requirement is that you have to maintain a credit balance. No transaction fees, free direct debit setup, facility to setup standing orders. Customer service is alright, though nothing much to talk about and quite comparable to Permanent TSB, I reckon..
