    Because you can't spell.

Oh, and because people like "human interest" stories. And we live in a culture where celebrity, no matter how worthlessly earned it is, is king.

Mind you, I'm pretty sure that it didn't get top billing. If it had, now that would be worth complaining about.

Jesus, that is one of the most annoying posts I have ever tried to read.

Think i managed to reach the third line and lost interest...

As aidan said, our culture craves this pointless news...and so we enter the age where even the news has to be dumbed down

Though you typically find crap like that in newspapers like the mirror, sun ect.

in fairness for a lot of people it is not pointless at all, george best was/is one of the most skillful footballers that ever lived and is ill in hospital, that's news to me.
his celeb status was far from 'worthlesly earned'.

don't get me started on how a model who is famous for being good looking is all over the news for weeks because she is on coke like all the rest of them, now that's pointless news..

Which is only worthless to you because you don't care. I'm sure there are people out there who are as gripped on that story as you are to this.

The crux of it is that neither of these stories are news, but gossip at the very best.

    you said:

the OP was talking about George Best and you posted this in reply, were you not talking about George Best?

I know that I don't think it is newsworthy because I amn't interested, eh, duh? that was the point I was making, the OP has no interest in football so doesn't think this is news, I have no interest in a model putting powder up her nose so I don't think that is newsworthy. However they are both on the news so obviously they both are..

So what is your definition of news if these issue are just gossip?

No, actually. For all his failings, his fame is earned by his skill as a footballer. His infamy is earned by what he did off the pitch.

"No matter how worthlessly earned." Celebrity is celebrity, whether you worked all your life doing something worthwhile by day and slowly killing youself by night, or whether you flashed your tits on this weeks bit of voyeuristic television, or anything in between.

Things that effect people lives are issues. It might have been somewhat more of an issue had he been in the starting eleven for whatever club come next Saturday, but not as it is.

I have no objection to "lighter" stories, as long as it isn't treated with the same gravity as other, more pertinent ones. The problem is that these days, they often are.

Print media can handle this better as they can catagorise and group in ways that broadcast media can't, allowing people to read what they want, and avoid the rest if desired. I don't have that option if I decide I want to skip over the latest Kate Moss story on the radio. Sure I can stop paying as much attention, but thats disjointed and uncomfortable as an experience.

because quite simply these are stories that people are interested in.
fortunately, people like the OP do no make up the majority of people who watch the news.
although i would be interested to hear what 'should' be in the news instead?

surely you people have more to do with your lives than get irate over other people being on the television.
i mean, are you really that bored?

I think the main reason people are interested in this, besides Best being a celebrity and all, is him being such a ****ing selfish gob****e having been given a second chance at life with a new liver and then pissing it away.
