An Odd problem..

A bit of a strange problem that has bugged me for the last 2 days and I can't seem to fix it.. It seems to be mainly to do with the desktop..

    1. I run XP and yesterday, things started to get a bit messed up.. I turn it on and I have lost a signifigant amount of my desktop icons..

I try to add more but when I right click -> new-> Shortcut, a box appears telling me that the path is invalid or something..

when I drag icons onto the desktop they don't appear, but when I drag them again I am told that a copy already exists on the desktop and it asks me if I want to replace the said icon.. even though I can't see it..

when I paste icons from another folder, I get a box telling me that the name is too long.. and I am given a bar to rename it to something shorter... even when I do that, the icons don't become visible

    2. I can't fully download anything from firefox.. the download bar reaches 100% but never actually completes.. it just maintains at that stage..

Possible Origin - yesterday, another user of the PC,
(let's call him "Jim" ;) ) re-installed Microsoft Anti-Spyware and was given a few actions to block or allow... one of them involved a shell folder or something of the sort.. not fully knowing what he was doing, or what shell folders were, he blocked an attempt to change some shell folder from \Desktop to %userprofile% \ Desktop
    or something like that..

Jim tried to find a way to undo this action but couldn't find any means to do so... he eventually uninstalled AS in the hope that this would fix the problem

also, sometime after that, Jim rebooted the system so some Anti-Spyware actions could come into effect, when Windows reopened, that was when he noticed the loss of Icons...

what leads me to believe this part of the problem was that when today, I downloaded the program Desktop Sidebar (using IE), and during the installation process, an error message appeared telling me that the program was unable to access %userprofile% and so wasn't able to be installed.

a bit of a random problem and apologies for the huge amount of vagueness and/or blatent idiocy.. in any case, it's all Jim's fault.. any help would be very much appreciated...
