about a week ago this thing showed up in microsoft word. i dont know what it is but i can't get rid of it and its doing really weird things to the text, eg if i paste in a block of text it puts one letter on each line or sometimes puts a dot between each word. anyone know what it is or how to make it go away? i can't really google it because i've no idea what to call it other than really annoying thing.

First thing I though of was "Dear oh Dear, who is this guy?" but then I thought I'd give you the benifit of the doubt.

In MS Word, the "thing" you are worried about is a paragraph spacer. It's Word's way of telling you where you pressed the ENTER key in your document. Depending on your setup, you also may see little dot's in between your words. This is Word's way of telling you where you pressed space. Arrows to the right is where you pressed TAB, etc.

These can be turned on and off. There is a button on the toolbar with the same picture as your "thingy". Click it and they should go away.

    exactly as IrishTLR said.
    But pre-empting a possible "I don't see that icon":
Tools Menu > Options > View > (Under Formatting Marks: ) Paragraph Marks
    (untickety)

My new favourite word :), esp. when sung to the tune of Blackstreet's 'No Diggity'

thanks ppl. my dad managed to turn it on and then forget how he did it. i couldn't see the thing to turn it off because he then managed to delete the toolbar for it and tell me he hadn't. he insisted the thing he clicked was still there. still should have found it tho :)
