Considering the possibility of selling up and moving from Dublin to Athboy. We've been thinking about moving to somewhere 30 or 40 miles out of the city, and having looked at a few places, Athboy strikes me as a possibility.

We looked around Navan, and in particular Johnstown, I wasn't wild about the place I must say. Some nice houses, but it looks just like any Dublin suburb to me - which is something I want to get away from.

Anyone on here live in Athboy or near there? What's it like? (Very general question I know, but is there anything "big" I should know?) :-)

you'll need to get sky digital, or else put up with a few snowy channels
you can get broadband, on the phoneline, (no wireless)
dont buy petrol in the town, much cheaper elsewhere
some evenings the navan side of the town smells a bit pooey, but they are working on that

    roads
navan road is crap, very bumpy, trim road is very twisty, and you wont get to overtake anyone on it
a lot of dodgy parking in the town, can be slow to get through it, but nothing compared to any street in dublin

    food
the hotel does a great steak diane, it arrives sizzling on the plate
the veg shop is great and fairly cheap
try the pork stirfry from the butchers, with a heap of steammed veg
not a fan of the resterausnts in the town, the "rainy lane bistro" is out the navan road a bit and ment to be brilliant
the takeaways serve very unhealthy food, just cook your own!

    night life
pubs grand, some slighty farmerey, avoid the nightclub, just go to waxies and then doran's. doran's smoking area is the best place to be

    school
went to the secondary, twas grand, read about it on ratemyteacher

tv licence guy was doing the rounds last week, so hopefully he wont be back for a while

Thanks for the info. Noticed the road from Navan alright, pretty awful for an "N" road. Took a spin up there again last weekend purely to time the trip - the road from the N3 to Trim is excellent, no hold-ups, long straight stretches and nice to drive on. Much better than the N51. The Trim to Athboy stretch is not as good, but is not as bad as the N51, plus no Dunshaughlin or Navan to negotiate when driving to Dublin. Overall I was surprised how quickly I got there and back.

Looking for somewhere small enough to be friendly but big enough to have a reasonable selection of shops, schools etc.. I saw two national schools and a secondary school. Looking in Priory Gate estate, nice small estate of all detached houses. Prices are excellent for someone coming from Dublin, selling my semi would get me a large detached house and leave plenty of change.

Will certainly look up the schools, want somewhere good for my son who starts next year. Need to investigate them and see if there's places. Would be interested in the Irish school up the road also.
