Adaptation of the Carnegie Medal-winning novel by Pullman, the first volume in the His Dark Materials trilogy. In a parallel Oxford, young Lyra Belacqua begins a dimension-crossing odyssey that builds from a merely atypical children's adventure into a complex (and frequently quite dark) philosophical epic.

    Directed by
    Anand Tucker

I've just started reading the first book, and I'm already wondering what the movie will be like. I know Tom Stoppard was the original writer for the screenplay but now it's been re-written a few times since.

I can't see this working out too well as a film at all seeing as how they've removed all references to the church.

I must say it really is a great book though. I've only read the first one, but I've been meaning to pick up the rest of them.

The Dark Trilogy has to be my favoutite book of all time... Great read. Can't wait for the movie. So they have taken all the relgious aspect out of it? That sucks just a little doesn't it? It was such a big part of the books...

I'm just suprised they didn't just make the religious side into "Islamic fundamentalists". I've read the trilogy, and would definitely recommend reading 'em all! I can wait for the film. :(

Yeah... It's a rather large part of the story.

It think it's all just going to be a shadowy government conspiracy instead.

The director talks to Comingsoon.net about the project....

"I'm thinking that it's just a movie about a little girl who's looking for a family, so it's still just all about emotions. It doesn't matter how big or small it is, you still have to turn up with a camera and some actors and try to make it convincing for an audience. If you don't get that right, forget it. It doesn't matter how much CGI you have. It's still gotta work on an emotional level and tell a good story."

Of course, many people were probably wondering how the director of smaller projects like Hilary and Jackie was able to score himself such a huge and long awaited project like this one. "I loved that project for ten years, and I tried to option the book when it first came out," he told ComingSoon.net. "I've been passionate about it forever, and I was the bottom of a very long list of people when the chance came in February to try to get the job. I put together a pitch and I hustled and lobbied, and I met everybody at New Line and told them what I felt what the movie should be. To their credit, they decided they would want to go with that. I hope I don't let them down."

I can't believe this! They eviscerate the plot to appease the Christians in the US and they give it the same title as the bloody book which has damn all to do with neutered film - I'm sure this will be brilliant. Save your money and buy the book series instead it's far more enjoyable then this pap.

He pulled out due to "technical reasons" but I think he's still working on the script with Tucker. This new guy is a virtual unknown, has made some stuff for TV and some british indie films, whos only major film has been the recent "Shopgirl" which has been getting mixed reviews but mainly positive reviews from the Toronto Film Festival.
