    Ok... Using Windows I'll assume..

    Are you using speakers?
    Test with headphones??

If still not working with headphones: ensure that the speaker icon in the tray (the area next to the clock) doesn't have an X (i.e. The sound has not been muted)

    if still NOK:
Click on Start -> Control Panel ("Switch to classic view") -> open System -> click on Hardware (Assuming XP) -> Click on Device Manager -> Click on the little + next to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
    List what is there.

on the left hand side there's text, looks like a hyperlink that says "switch to classic view" - click on it.
or, in the current view (lots of purdy icons?) -> click on performance and maintenance..

Is there a little Speaker icon on the button right of the screen?
If there's isn't then go to "Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > "Volume Control" and make sure that everything is turned on in there.

The purpose of the System Restore is to revert to a previous Windows config..
First Q: When was the sound last working?

    Click on Start
    Then All Programs
    Accessories
    System Tools
    System Restore
    Choose "Restore my computer.."
You will be presented with a calendar: Left click on a date (that is in bold!), on which date the computer was working OK.
    Click next, follow on-screen instructions...

This will take a few minutes and restart your computer... Click OK/close on restart.
