Popped into Lidl in Letterkenny yesterday morning to get one of their 18v cordless drills priced at €30 which I thought was good value.

None left so I wandered into Atlantic Homecare next door and hey presto they are selling a Blackspur 18V cordless drill for €20. I assume that they are available at their other stores around the country.

You couldn't go wrong at that price

    I dont know;

From my experience cheap cordless drills have brutal batteries that take ages to charge and no time to run down.

While cordless drills have their functions (e.g. electricians who need to drill a great many holes in places well spread out). I think the ordinary DIYer would be better off with a corded drill, argos in Dundrum had fine end of the line JCB ones for about €30 recently. I wouldnt bet my life on them, but they will be fine for handy jobs.

I bought one of those cordless blackspurs late last year....pile of sh*te....ended up taking it back and paying an extra fiver for a corded hammer drill (same brand)
The cordless simply didn't have the torque I needed (drilling pre-cast concrete)

Point taken if you pardon the pun.

The heaviest use I will give it will be screwing a bedside locker together :)

But as a very ocassional DIY enthusiest I think it will do me.

Wertz, were you really expecting 20 quids worth of cordless drill to drill through pre cast concrete? ceap cordless drills are meant for light diy.

corded drills are rated in Watts so you can easily compare their power ratings.
cordless drills have a voltage rating that has NOTHING to do with how powerfull they are - it's all marketing. They don't have a wattage listed because it would be pathetic.

some day I'll find a link to the wattage they use.

The thing is, I've used a semi-professional cordless to do tough jobs, and they fly through the material....fair enough they maybe cost 5-6 times as much as the cheapo one, but at least they're a drill, not a glorified power-screwdriver...

As stated above i would only use one now and again for small DIY jobs around the house. I would prefer to call it a cordless driver rather than a drill.

If I needed to bore a hole in masonary or the likes I always use the corded drill.

But I will still stick to my original post that the 18V cordless drill in Atlantic Homecare is a bargain at €20

    Found one
So a guesstimate is ~€1 per Watt
you'll also notice it's a tad higher priced than a 450 Watt corded drill

    http://www.globe-mart.com/page/d/dw006k.htm
    DeWalt® 24 Volt 1/2" Drill/Hammer Drill

    Our Price: $420.00

    Features:
    # 460 watt motor

Yeah my hitachi will drill through concrete, but it cost 300 quid, with cordless drills you get what you pay for, that drill has done everything for me (I built My own house) whereas a 70 quid black and decker lasted me 4 months.

Also alot of people rate by batt voltage which is equally as useless as wattage, you need to know the current output of the battery and the strength of the motor, to make a decision. and even then when everything looks right, in general a 20 euro motor doesnt last very long!

woodies where selling all their roc stuff off during the week got a 3000rpm corded hammer/screwdriver drill for €10, in saying that got a cheap one from b and q last year and its already given in but at least this one has a 2 year warrenty.

Heh, I was in Lidl, Letterkenny today looking for the same thing (and some beers). Never thought of going to Atlantic, as last time I was in there, everything I looked at seemed way too expensive.

Might take a wee look tomorrow if they're open

Yeah I think they open on Sunday and you should be able to get one.

I also noticed that Atl. H. have step ladders very similar to the ones on offer in Lidl at the moment. Same price but they might be a foot or two shorter
