Just got this off the games forum:

"Sony Computer Entertainment Ireland today announce that Gaelic Games: Football, exclusive to the PlayStation 2 entertainment system, will launch across Ireland on the 11th of November, 2005.

For the first time ever take to the field in a Gaelic football game fully licensed by the GAA and developed by IR Gurus using their unique AFL Rules game engine. Gaelic Games: Footballâ will allow players to play a single game or follow a full GAA season, including the National football league, Provincial and All Ireland Football Championships.

Recreate dozens of moves from soloing, handpassing, tackling and shooting in one of 11 photo realistic stadiums including Croke Park, O'Moore Park, Semple Stadium, Casement Park and Pearse Stadium.

Players can choose from all current county teams including London and New York. Gaelic Games: Football also includes full commentary from the legendary Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Sony Computer Entertainment Ireland has worked closely with Foras na Gaeilge, the all Island body for the promotion of the Irish language, to develop a full Irish language menu option and manual."

    Great ad!

I know but I brought it over here so the GAA people could discuss it as well as the games people. We can all be one big happy family!

Files only last on that site for so long.

Thought the game itself looked a bit dodgy myself. Looks very like FIFA, a soccer game I've never liked. It always made it too easy to just hold down the sprint button, and run the pitch so that you ended up with games being 18-13 or some crazy score!

Hopefully they've made it realistic. Players likenesses would be fantastic, I'd love to see the red lad Dermot McCabe lift the Sam, the closest I'll ever get to it is a game!

Straight from the horses mouth as it were! Im starting saving now, roll on 11th Nov! Shame that not all the players will be in it though (dispute with GPA) but still, happy friggin days!

Excellent! Can't wait to have a go at this! I agree with Lemlin on this one, I hope it's more like Pro Evo than FIFA. The more competitive it is the more interesting it will be to play. Pro Evo is great in that aspect of the game.

Anyone know if there is a facility on the game that allows you to create your own teams or whatever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

I'd say it'll be like FIFA. Looks like it. Apparently its just a conversion of an Aussie Rules game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,745 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

Ive never played the aussie rules game but rumour has it that its very basic, similar to the old Jonah Lomu game. Although that was a great game.

I have the Aussie Rules game and it is possible to win by 300 points. Hopefully the Gaelic Football game will be more competive. This is going to be a difficult time financially for me with FM 2006 out on Oct 21st and this on Nov 11th.

Had a sneaking suspicion it would be based on an Aussie Rules format alright.

Jonah Lomu rugby was the bomb! I remember that if you ran it through Dos and then turned it off and played CM97/98, the latter would run unbelievably quickly, getting through a game in about 15 seconds!

    But thats OT completely!

Looking forward to the novelty value of a GAA Game, but can't see it being very addictive.

There's nothing more addictive than watching Cavan beat Meath and Monaghan by 20 points. :D

It's a absolute f**king disgrace if the players are not involved in this, and receive royalties.

The GAA are absolutely nothing without their players, this is exploitation of the worst kind.

Well, we might have to settle for a 3 or 4 point win in reality. We'll take that. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

Sure we beat Meath by two points in reality, don't need dreams or a video game to beat Boylan's boys (sadly we put an end to his career!).

I can't wait for the game to come out.I'd buy it over Fifa 2006 any day.We may get a surprise with this game.

Me thinks we are in for a treat.

From what I hear the GPA were in discussions with an Irish software firm to develop a game, while the GAA were in discussions with an Australian firm (going against the usual ethos of using only Irish products, where Irish products are available).

Anyway the GAA one is the only one which seems to have got off the ground, but from what I hear its very closely based on an Aussie Rules game and I've heard a lot of negative comments and very few positive comments about that game (but never played it myself).

According to the GPA the GAA/Aussie software company have no rights to use players' names in this game, if they want to they'll have to pay for the rights (the same as is done for many soccer games, rugby games etc). Its not clear whether non-GPA players' names will be used, or if those players have got any shekels out of it (I think not), but I guess there'll be a facility in the game to change the names of players.

I'd imagine they're trying to get a few in from every province and Breffni got ousted by Clones and Casement in Ulster. Where is there a list of the pitches in the game btw?

Typical that Leinster get four stadiums in the game and Ulster only gets two. I mean FFS the grass behind both goals at Tailteann is hardly professional looking is it?

I can't believe the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick isn't in the game either. It's probably one of the finest grounds in Ireland apart from Croker.

Just like the Westmeath Hurlers got loads of money off the GPA ?

Funny old world when DJ Carey is making money off the winners of the Christy Ring cup.

I'm a Gaelic Footballer. I will be buying the game. I don't see it as undermining me, or any of my team mates. Sure it would be nice to see players get some little rewards, but we are all playing for the love of the game at the end of the day. Nobody is forcing us to play.

Image rights row: The Westmeath county board has strongly criticised a calendar produced by the Gaelic Players' Association in the aftermath of the county's historic Christy Ring Cup - and they say the calendar has "taken €12,000 to €15,000 out of the county" at a time the hurlers are trying to raise funds for a holiday trip.
And they have accused the GAA top brass of "pussy-footing" around the issues of image rights and the organisation's relationship with the GPA.
County board PRO Pat Doherty said he received a phonecall at his work place from The Sports Poster Company who produced the calendar for the GPA, asking if he would like to take out an advertisement.
"I find it incredibly frustrating that this could take place. This has taken €12,000 to €15,000 out of the county. I asked the girl who rang me if the GAA in Westmeath would benefit, if they had been given permission by the county board, or if the hurling board had been contacted, and the answer was NO in all three cases," he said.
Westmeath's Leinster Council delegate Tom Farrell raised the matter at this week's meeting of the county board, and pointed out that the photograph used in the picture was taken over 12 months before the Christy Ring Cup win over Down.
"The team photo was taken in Limerick in 2004 on the day we played Down in a league final. Nine of the players in the picture are not even in the panel this year," he said.
"The jersey is the old Westmeath jersey. And they have airbrushed the Westmeath County Council logo from the jersey. It is totally dissatisfactory."
Westmeath hurling captain John Shaw yesterday declined to comment on whether the team would receive any of the proceeds from the calendar, for which advertisements were sold at €220, €300, and €400. He said he was awaiting a call from a GPA official to clarify the position.
County secretary Paddy Collins backed a call for the matter to be raised at this weekend's GAA Management Committee meeting, and accused the GAA at top level of "pussy-footing" around the issues of image rights and the GAA's relationship with the GPA.
Paul Earls of the Sports Poster Company yesterday defended his company. He said they paid the GPA "a lot of money" every year to produce items like this, and "we are the only company putting anything back. There are a lot of cowboys out there putting nothing back."
He said he would make efforts to produce a new calendar with an up-to-date photograph, and said that the company routinely airbrushed out logos because of the patents on logos.
No GPA official could be contacted for comment.

No respect for the GPA. They're not out for the players, they're heading down the road of becoming a sports management company, taking advantage of the players.

I think you've got this wrong McClane. The players are the ones to benefit from this.

As I understand it the Westmeath player's received royalties from this calendar. The county board are angry that the money went direct to the players rather than to them.

    Just think about it..

If the GPA had done something which meant the players lost money for their holiday fund (if you believe the county board!) and the players didnt get a thing in compensation, would the players be up in arms? Yes

Are they up in arms? No.

And the way the GPA wanted the computer game is that every player would have received a royalty for his image rights. And Colm Cooper would have received the exact same amount as the corner back for the Donegal hurlers.

The players are the ones to benefit from this.

    Are they ?

The photos used in the Calender are old. Many of the players in the Calender are not even playing for Westmeath hurling anymore. And many new faces have arrived.

So which players get the benefits ?

    EyeToy® Cameo:
By using the EyeToy: Cameo you will be able to take high-resolution
    images
of your face with the EyeToy Camera and turn out a squad featuring you
    and
    some of your friends.
That sounds pretty cool. The EyeToy Cameo thing is impoosible to make though. Let's wait and see. I have heard that the AFL game is rubbish though so I hope it doesn't reflect on the Gaelic one. Aswell, any news about a hurling game??

Here's a review of AFL 2005, the game on which the GAA game is apparently based:

    http://www.cnet.com.au/games/ps2/0,39029679,40057282,00.htm

Its not a great review! Here's a few snippets:

    - Unfortunately, while AFL Premiership 2005 features enough stats to make the most ardent footy trainspotter weep, average gameplay coupled with unimpressive visuals makes this title more of a behind than a goal.

    - Free 100 Years of AFL DVD that's packaged with the game

    - But once you get past the stats and background information, things look decidedly shaky.

    - The most apparent failing here is a real lack of graphical punch. The player models are blocky and have little detail. Faces on the game look like they were carved out of potatoes.

    - All of the players in the game look like they're moving through treacle. Players will also often run straight through others as if they weren't there -- you'll find yourself chasing one minute, and then suddenly you're in front of your target.

    - You'll also find plenty of graphical glitches. Balls will get trapped in mid-air, while supporters' pom-poms will sway behind the goal posts independent of anyone actually moving them.

    - The highlight of AFL Premiership 2005 is the stadiums -- all have been rendered well, and will be instantly recognisable to fans.

    - AFL Premiership 2005's controls, while fairly simple and kept to a few buttons, is for the most part sluggish and unresponsive. You will get frustrated at the noticeable delays between pressing a button and having that action performed on screen. Tackling, for example, is a hit and miss process -- you press the appropriate button madly in hope that one of your presses actually sticks.

    - The computer opponent's AI is also not sharp -- all of the teams seem to exhibit the same strategy of moving it through the midfield via continuous handballing, before chipping it around their 50.

    - The game's designers also made some curious decisions about the strengths and weaknesses of each AFL team. Collingwood (which finished 15th in this year's real world competition and 13th in 2004) rates the highest.

    - Things are somewhat brighter on the audio side, with the commentary from Denis Cometti, Dermott Breretton and boundary rider Christie Malthouse being quite entertaining, although you will hear the same phrases over and over again.

    - Sadly, AFL fans will have to chalk this one up as another missed goal

I suppose though that GAA fans will still be easy targets, as any game is better than no game.

Would be far better if it were a 'football manager' type game.

In Mayo we would have training schedules built around

Weights - How many cars needed to be towed in the car park.

Skills - Shooting practice at a barn door

Morale - Keep your missus safe from your players

Tactics - Make 1 change when a player is injured, not 6

Selection - Deselect any player from Current All-Ireland Club Champions

Anyone seen the ad?looks quite good conmsidering its the first game.Croke Park looks stunning and soooooo realistic. The afl game is a different game.I know its based on that but it will be different and in my view it should be better than a lot of people think. In the ad the kits look real.I hear they are using panel members and minor players as names. If players are not members of the GP, does that mean they will be in the game?
