Yeah, my sister has just done so this summer

J-1 visas are issued by US Immigration, they're not Canadian. Canada issue their own ones but nobody knows what they're called.

im a bit confused.... did your sister use a j1 visa to work in canada, or did she have to apply for a certain canadian visa?

Sorry. If you get a J-1 from the US govt you can't use it to work in Canada.

Canadian Immigration issue their own student working visas which AFAIK they don't call J-1s, but they are exactly the same as far as Irish students are concerned, so everyone here calls them J-1s.

So the answer to your original question is yes, providing you get a Canadian visa, not an American one.
