I think that might be windows messenger the old one, go to control panel, set program access and defaults and you can uninstall it somewhere there!

sounds like you have windows messenger AND msn messenger installed. I'd remove the windows messenger. Start->settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs. Click on Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left and then remove the tick beside windows messenger. Then click next.

Should solve that problem for once and for all.

(you might need SP2 to be installed in order to be able to remove Windows Messenger)

hi i do have sp2. so what your saying is to unistall the new one then reinstall it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

    no.

you have 2 separate programs. One is WINDOWS Messenger, the other is MSN messenger. If you have MSN one there's no need (IMO) to have Windows messenger so just get rid of it by uninstalling it.

That will fix the problem in your original post.

You can remove the run line from the registry at: HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run and then delete the key that says MSMSGR.EXE then your problem should be gone

Alternativiely you could do yourself a favour and remove both of the security prone bits of rubbish. favourite is that popup bug that abounds on some machines.

mp3guy - be kind - thats cruel that is lol ;) same for uch - you'll scare the living bejebus out of the bod sending them into the reg lol ;)

powerhouse dans method will result in a message telling you that you changed a setting in msconfig on next reboot - simple tick the do not show again box and ok out of it.

the method by irlrobins is your simplest (And correct way for a novice user) to switch of windows messenger.

Myself though I'd rather use 'Trillian' or 'Skype' (I use skype now) and import all your msn settings etc and have a lot less problems with security issues which msn is prone to ...

Pop - Up's are there foretee lol :)
