Are all Fans for PC's standard fitting? I need to replace the one in a Dell Diemention 4600. Is it just a matter of popping the old on out and the new one in?

I don't know the size so I'll have to take it out and measure it? How do I know what cable it is? (molex or standard)

Out of interest what is your problem with the 4600?

I had a fan on my 4600 make a screeching noise one day for about 30 seconds. It stopped and hasn't recurred in over a month.

The fan on them slides into notches on the panel at the back. It also has a green cover hinging onto it to pull air through the CPU heatsink. I presume an ordinary fan could be fitted, but it might take some modifications.

molex is bigger its the same kinda cable that goes into cd drives etc r IDE hard drives's it will have 4 female pins but only 2 will actaully b wired, generaly OEM ones will have a clear/white plastic plug.
the standard ones (cant remember if they have a fancy name) is just 3 pins in a much smaller plug
    like this
btw u can kinda tell by eye but measuring it works too :p 120mm is huge!

Its actually a friends PC and recently when he turns it on the fan fails to start causing an error, he then has to press F1 to get started but without the fan working so I'm guessing unless he gets it fixed soon his PC or some part of it is going to overheat and do damage

The system wouldn't detect a faulty case fan (Anyone disagree?). Could you be referring to the CPU fan? If so, your friend could have a dead processor at any moment...

Thats possible, he just came into work and told me some fan warning comes up on startup I just guessed. His PC still works ok though?
