I'm thinking of joining the City West Lakes course as they have a very affordable Bronze package, which means you get reduced green fees and resident prices for the Championship course.

Is anyone here a member? Or played eiter course often?
If so I'd appreciate your comments, recommendations etc

    Thanks
    Alan

i'm a member, you aren't joining the 'lakes course' you are joining citywest itself.
with the bronze you get reduced prices on the lakes course,
however you don't get reduced or residents prices for the champs course, who told you that?

basically with that package you get a GUI handicap and cheaper golf on the lakes, if
you aren't pushed about hanidcap or don't want to play the lakes often it isn't worth it.

    Thanks Davey,

I'm looking at the leaflet at the moment that says you get resident rates even with the bronze package.

Whats the course itself like? I've heard that its tricky and it holds up pretty well during the winter...

you only get reduced fees on the lakes. possibly you get 'residents' rates
on the champ course, but if so they are just what get if you call up.
call them and ask about the rate.

I actually only played the lakes course once, but the main course holds
up very well in the winter as long as you stick on the fairway, if you get
in the rough it is as wet as any other course..

I think I'll head out this evening and play it (if the rain hold off :-\ ), no point in joining a course for a year that I haven't played!!

I've played this course twice and really enjoyed it - I don't think the argument that it's like a "pitch and putt" as it has lots of short par 3 holes really holds up.

The holes are quite technical and good fun, lots of traps/water. Bear in mind that it is intended as a "business" rounds type of course to back up the Championship course.

I've played it in a total typhoom by the way - holds up well, but just the same as standing out in the open in howling rain and wind anywhere else!

Hmmm, well I think either The Lakes course or Grange Castle so if anyone can offer the pro's and cons of both that'd be great. Paying for anything else would proably be wasted on me at this stage!

    HI Willy

I'm a member in both, but mostly play Citywest. Both are good courses. CW as you know has alot of par 3's, but imho is a much tougher course to play on. GC is quite forgiving. They plan to open 9 extra holes on GC soon, so that may change. If you want the freedom of playing whenever you want even on your own, CW is the place for you as very rarely is it a problem to get a tee time. Unless you're out at 8am you won't get out on your own at GC, you will be put in with a 2 or 3 ball which is ok but if you want to practice and spend a bit of time on any part of your game CW mid week is ideal for this. The greens in CW are outstanding and in much better condition than GC, not that the greens in GC are bad but there is a difference.

Overall I prefer CW, it is a short course but difficult and anyone who claims its like playing pitch and putt is having a laugh. With GC you will get to play with most clubs in your bag but its not as challenging as CW. Hope some of this helps you make a decision one way or the other.

    Scary

good points by scary, when I was a member in GC found it not great tbh but am very impressed by how they are running it since the new people took over and by all accounts the new holes are going to make the course a siginicantly more challenging layout, 200 yard par 3 over water, par 5 that isn't a mikey mouse distance etc etc..

I've played both since and both courses are good.
Unfortunately the day I played CW I had no business on a golf course, I was wrecked, played terrible and add to that a changing grip and swing...not good :(
Tip for anyone thinking of playing it: Bring plenty of balls!!

Played GC a week later and I must say I was impressed, didn't think it'd be as good and is pretty forgiving, which adds to the "feel good" factor. Plus I drove as good as I ever have.
But whats the deal with drainage on the 4th hole??? there's no more than a square metre of uninterrupted grass...
