You need to get yourself a TV capture card and record the tapes onto yer PC then if required convert & burn them to DVD.

So once you've everything backed up onto your computer you plan on using the PC as a media centre?

Windows Media Centre Edition or MythTV are nice solutions. Make sure to check the hardware comaptibility list first though. Then you just need to get yourself a nice remote control - search eBay!
Otherwise, you could just use Windows hooked straight up to the telly and use WMP for playing all of your movies, and use a wireless keyboard and mouse. Unless you've a HDTV though - it won't look pretty (whilst doing general task eg. checking your email etc. Watching movies is just fine!)

    Have fun!

I am going to use Media Portal - open source software -same as MS MCE.

    Just waiting on parts !!!
