Cheap calls to/from Portugal

I was trying to get cheap calls to someone on holidays in Portugal. They have an Irish vodafone monthly bill-pay mobile with them and have opted for the "passport" option. Is it better for me to ring them from landline or my vodafone mobile or would it be cheaper if they ring me. Also the T&C of the passport option…

Is it better for me to ring them from landline or my vodafone mobile or would it be cheaper if they ring me. Also the T&C of the passport option indicate prices are 79c plus cost of normal Irish calls. If they have free minutes left on their bill-paid option are these used?
