What happened to Ed Byrnes Career?

What happened to Ed Byrnes Career?
He showed so much potential in the early 90s and even on the Late Late show was hillarious, yet despite for certain episodes of The Panel most of his tv work has been pathetic, In my opinion his humour was ruined by the poor shows which he presented/took part in and asks the question will any Irish comedian ever be succesful in the Uk/abroad.

He sold his soul to Sky

I think he always sucked ass through a straw and just got a couple of opportunities to actually make a decent career. He's not that funny and his delivery is terrible so those opportunities didn't get him anywhere. The sooner he is gone altogether the better.

Unless you have extremely high standards of success, everyone from Spike Milligan to Dylan Moran would answer that question.

Hopefully him and jason byrne(or whatever his name is!) have given up on comedy as I use to cringe when I saw them on tv. They'll probably return as a double act now ;)

The concise version: He was funny, then he wasn't.

He was given an opportunity on the Panel, failed to be funny 90% of the time so why would anyone else want him?
Oh and he also presented Just For Laughs(I think that was the name), wasn't funny on that either.
Hopefully that's the last we'll see of him.

In fairness he tried a bit too hard and may have got over exposed. He did an RTE sit-com, ITV one, Just for Laughs and a SKY ad show. That is pretty successful they just didn't work out very well. He obviously has a warm spot for RTE by doing the sit-com on a minor budget and Just For Laughs.
The ad show is a low point but watch Das Crazy Clip Show on Paramount and you can see others have fallen too.

It's very simple. He was kinda funny, but then he cut his hair. His hair was clearly the source of all his powers and now they/it are gone.

    It's science.

Hmm.. that sounds stupid, but it was actually around the time!!!!

Well hes back tomorrow with just for laughs .. gotta love that show (if only he wasnt in it) .. lol, i wish there was no presenter, takes up comedy time! :)

Ed Byrne is a terrible, terrible, unfunny comedian that never deserved to be where he was in the first place.

Going on like him is probably acceptable when you're 20-25 but not when you're 33.

It's the same reason you find the Undertones lame as they play "teenage kicks" well into their 40s.

Ha so true his only 'joke' I can remember smiling at

'Hi,I'm Ed Byrne...but you might know me better as Darlene from Roseanne'

Hopefully he won't be on The Panel this season.

I thought he was the only good thing about the Cassidy's.

But what do you expect your career to do when you do An RTE and An ITV Sit Com in the same year

Just for Laughs is good but not because of him. Which is back tonight. followed by the Panel.

Ed Byrne was never funny. Last weeks episode of Podge andd Rodge was probably about him.

he's just an idiot. His sense of humour is just silly and he tried so hard to be funny on the panel and it just didnt work. And he's terrible on Just For Laughs. How does he keep getting work?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,583 ✭✭✭limerick_man

He's not on the panel this year! I actually loved him when i first saw him! His thing was stand up comedy ... he sold out to TV, thats not what hes good at though

He has a really annoying voice.

His Alanis Morrisette "Ironic" routine is what got him noticed. It was very funny but once it stopped being topical he couldn't use it.

Can't remember any joke he has told since.

Just For Laughs simply does not work.

Showing brief clips of standup's is pointless. To get any entertainment you need to watch the whole show of around an hour or more.

(Ps most of the comedians they showed on it were dire)

I am going to see him in the Ed Burke theater next week - delighted.

I have to agree it was the hair!!! It def was the source of his power. If I am watching just for laughs I actually flick when he is interviewing. He is tolerable on the panel but really should give up on tv for a while and practice being funny

Yep, I agree with this completely -- I can't stand Ed Byrne -- he's not funny at all.

isn't repitition sometimes the key to most comedy, think catch phrases!

don't most comedians tour their stuff for atleast a year and then come up with totally new stuff, its your fault if you see it twice :)

just for laughs is great/vtal because where else are you going to see clips of the wide range of comedians from a world famous comedy festival on terrestrial tv, its nothing to with ed byrne bar the fact he presents it.

I think he is ok,he has always been the same. Some people like him, some don't.
What happened in my opinion is that people copped on that he was just a bit better than average.

I HATE ED BYRNE. he's the worst comedian ever. With his stupid hair, incredibly annoying voice, and of course- dumb sense of humor. He's crap!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 348 ✭✭Fuhrio

hes better on the panel then any of the women on it.

Although i wouldnt be too upset if he was replaced by jimmy carr.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35 1800callturk

jimmy carr can be funny at times, but other times he just comes off gay, just his general demeanour, but yeah, better than ed byrne. what we really need on the panel is another andrew, now he's funny, did you see his saddam joke last week!

if you want comedy, turn to billy connolly, peter kay or bill bailey, i that order. bill bailey may be a bit weird in the head and he is definitely not eveyone's cup of tea, but if you watch bewilderness, you'll get at least a few descent laughs. he uses his music well in his show. ATTENTION if you are a fan of standup i urge you not to buy the bill bailey bewilderness cd, this is not standup, this is sessioned recording of comedy, only funny songs and slags, no standup, no jokes!

Funniest thing I ever saw on RTE was Podge'n'Rodge on The Panel absolutely rippin' the mickey out of Ed and Jason Byrne and that other langer, whatsisname from "Don't Feed the Gondolas".

In fairness, Ed B is probably the most talented of those three — which ain't saying much! But he long ago sold out and yes — despite being fairly small, long-haired and smort-orsed meself! ;) — I reckon he does have that kind of "slapability" factor...

Bill Bailey (live) is da man... :D

I never really found him funny, but I always got the impression he was a nice guy, trying his best.

Now, that Dave McSavage fella... ugh.
