Is there any big advantage for a company (of about 20 employees) to use their own mail exchange server as opposed to the normal POP3 accounts that come with a hosting package?

Nope, no advantage. The rule with IT is keep it simple, if it is not broke don't fix it.

    Stick with your pop accounts.

Unless you want to use the shared address books, calendaring and task functionality of something like Exchange, pop3/imap is excellent. That said, even if you want Exchange, talk to your hosting company, it's always better to do email in a hosted environment, unless you are a large company with an in-house data centre and staff.

It depends on what the company does.
If there is a lot of email between staff members and you want to send and receive very large attachments then an inhouse mail server may make sense. There are plenty of other solutions apart from exchange though ...
