What did people think of him during the press conference after the race ? He was asked if he'd like to thank anyone and he basically said no, that it was all down to him and no one had ever helped him. He didn't say anything about the team, the engineers, mechanics, pit crews etc, and he really seemed to be doing it deliberatly as if he'd thought about it in advance. A blown engine for him next race methinks.

well I missed some of the conference thanks to bloody ITV(their coverage is getting horrendous) but I saw the part where he said something like "the reason why im here is down to three or four people". Didnt think that was very sporting afterall to win a world championship you need the help of a lot of people. Why he didnt just say thanks to everybody who helped and leave it at that I dont know.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

    What he actually said was
Q: Try to describe your emotions on this momentous day for you.
FA: I think I came from a country with no traditions in Formula One and, you know, I fought alone, basically, because I had no help from anyone for all of my career. I arrived in Formula One thanks to the results in my previous categories and thanks to my sponsors and now I think this title is the maximum I can achieve in my life, in my career, and it is thanks to three or four people, no more than that.
    link

I suppose to be fair, he is a non-native english speaker and was probably a bit overwhelmed.

    Worthy Champion.

Old head on very young shoulders. Witness the solid drive under pressure from Schumi in Imola. Alonso, Kimi & Montoya are the new guard in F1 and i wonder if this is the last we'll see as Schumi as a Championship challenger.

Ferrari really had a hound of a car this year and Bridgestones were nowhere.

Think maybe what Alonso was trying to say was that he got to F1 and became champ without the huge commerical backing that is needed to make it in F1. Renault and Flav wouldnt have been too pleased to hear that tho'.

Btw Montoya is really putting it to Kimi in the last few races Monza, Belgium(moved over) &Brazil. Juan Pablo was getting a bid fed up workin for Kimi's faint Championship challenge .Cant wait till next year when JPM gets a full run at the Championhsip.

I hope next year we can see all four of them have equal cars and we will finally be able to see how good a driver Schumi actually is....and it would be very entertaining

Where have you been the last 12 years???

Let me remind you Michael Schumacher 7 World Championships
    Eddie Irvine None
    Rubens Barrichello none
    Jos Verstappen None
    Martin Brundle None
    Jonny Herbert mmm none also

BTW if your wondering why I picked these names they were all once team mates of Schumacher

I find that a incredibly stupid statement to wonder how good a driver the most successful Formula 1 driver ever is.

I don't think Alonso meant to be ungrateful in his statement at the press conference, I'm sure he meant to thank his team and everyone who helped him. When he got out of the car the first thing he did was hug all of his team so it's plain to see he is grateful and they all love him.
I think he's a great champion for the sport, I'm just disappointed for Kimi. Next year will prove super exciting when tehy go head to head again. Hopefully JPM can get a bit more involved in the battle than he has this year. And I'd like to see Fisi up there too.

How is it a stupid statement?
In my eyes he never had anybody worthwhile to compete against.
The only driver i would really rate in that list is Barrichello.

You wonder how good a driver Schumacher actually is. I think the figures can tell you that without wondering if he's up to taking on the likes of KR, JPM and FA.

Just Look at how he destroyed Damon Hill and Mika Hakkenin and pretty much everybody else who races in F1

Yeah he really destroyed him in Adelaide in 94 alright. That really set the tone for the rest of his carreer. If ya can't beat him, then ram the ****er off!

Best racing driver of all time? More like the most overated driver of all time! The fact of the matter is that Michael Schumacher has never been in a car with another driver capable of winning the world championship. And when he has won it's been in one of, if not, the best car. He's always had an entire team focused on him. He's always had team mates who's job it was to back him up and move over if need be. And he's always had the best luck and reliability.

Now this year he's in an average car, and oh my, how average he looks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 991 ✭✭✭endplate

He might have collided with Hill in '94 but in '95 Hill got his revenge by ramming MS twice off the track. And if you do some homework on the subject of how many times MS won the championship by ramming other drivers you will find the answer is only once

If you look back over the years MS has not always been in the best car. The only reason he's champion is because his team built him a car that was capable of getting to the finish line more than the rest. Just look at Alonso this year the McLaren was a faster car but it was too fragile to mount a challange early in the season.

I do agree however that his team mates were never capable of beating him but I wonder if there has been a driver out there for the last 10 years capable of beating him. Unfortunatly Schumacher never really got to challange Senna and Prost in anger so we will never know. They were probably the only drivers I know of capable of taking on MS

To say that MS looks average this year is a very poor arguement in my view. If that's the case then Rubens Barichello is a patethic driver cos he can't get anywhere near Schumacher this year.

David Coultard said this year that the sport has become Formula tyre thanks to the FIA and that is why Schumacher is not able to challange. Those were his words and not mine

Well said. This season has proved that Schumi is nothing but an average driver.

I'm still sickened to this day about Adelaide 94'.

Get over it and go see a councellor. I suppose you think Senna and Prost were better drivers? That wouldn't surprise me if you were that much of a hyprocrite.

How does this season only prove MS is a average driver explain?

Are you actually trying to say that M.S. is a better driver than Senna or Prost?
    You have to be joking

I think he's trying to say that they also showed that they'd do whatever it takes to win a championship, including ramming someone off.

Personally I don't think Schumacher is an average driver. I think he's a damn good driver. But nothing like the statistics or the hype would suggest. It just pisses me off that he's so often touted as the greatest driver of all time when he may not even be the greatest of his own generation.

Here's a reminder of what I wrote in a earlier comment on this thread

Yes Muckwarrior that is the point I was trying to get across. I was just testing the waters on Beekay and funnily enought they fell for it.

Anyway back to you Muckwarrior who do you think is the greatest F1 driver of all time?
Why did you say earlier that Schumacher was and average driver? Now your saying he's not I'm confused

Do you think im multiple people or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭Corben Dallas

I would rate Senna way above Schumi.

Problem is Schumi has made a mockery of all the standing F1 records that has lead to ppl thinking his is the greatest of all time. If fact i'd even rate Jim Clark above Schumi.

The records are distored becuase Schumi has never had a 'tier one' teamate like Senna, Prost, Mansell, Hakkinen Alonso, JPM or Kimi.

Barrichello and Irvine are the best hes had to 'fight' with both very competent talented drivers just below tier one. Other problem is they havent >ever< been allowed to 'fight' schumi either they still are/were under contract as number 2 drivers. Massa etc.

plus from day1 since joining Ferrari, the might of Ferrari has built the team around him, its his team. +hes dragged Ferrari up to be a top team.

What has this season proved? not that hes an average driver, its proved that Schumi has maybe one year left in F1, that the massive risks that a driver has to take to get the preformance out of a dog of a car(this years Ferrari) are not worth taking anymore, and if has another year like this (with the new wave Alonso,JPM & Kimi pushing for all their worth) he would probably hang up his helmet.

I didn't. I said he looked average this season.
As for the greatest driver? I don't know tbh, and neither does anyone else for that matter. It may be possible to pick the best driver from a particular era, like Fangio, Stewart, Senna etc, but theres no way of knowing how those drivers would directly compare to one another.
Anyway, I think the Schumacher era is over (fingers crossed).

No no no misunderstanding I said they cos I don't know if your a he or she (more likely a he I know) but didn't want to be incorrect

Sorry did not mean to imply you have multipe names

It's all good and well clapping your hands that Schumacher is on the decline nobody can go on forever. Obivously you've been listening to ITV and the english media too much. But I gurantee you in a few years people will be remembering how brilliant Schumacher was.

Everybody seems to think Schumacher made F1 boring but to me F1 got boring when James Allen took over commentating on ITV. Listening to him dribbling on and shouting for Montoyo all the time will make anyone think F1 was boring. It just so happened that Schumacher was winning all the time at the same time :D

    That's ok,

And James Allen is a dreadful commentator, sometimes it sounds like Brundle wants to smack him.

i think Brundle should give him a good wallop with his microphone it might knock some sense into him.....bring back Murray.....bring back Murray... :)
