Installing some extra memory in the gf's parents pc. its a few years old, running an ms-k7 pro board. it has a 128 (pc133) stick already, so i added another 128 pc133 stick and a 256 pc133 stick.

no problems when i add the extra 128 stick, BUT when I add the 256 stick I get 5/6 smiley faces! and doesnt boot. i've never come across anything like this before, has anyone got an ideas??

i have a feeling that you cannot mix and match ram sizes on those older motherboards, am not 100% sure but some where in the back of my mind is teling me that it would have to be 2x128 or 2x256 etc.

Try the 256 on its own, to eliminate the possibility it may be faulty

...and if the 256 works on its own then try using the 256 stick in Slot 1 and one of the 128s in Slot 2. Some older motherboards were cranky if you put the smaller ramstick in the first slot.

Google the make of the motherboard to find the max RAM it can hold. I just bought 512MB for my dad's comp only to find it wouldn't work as the max RAM allowed was 256MB. I shoulda looked first. Could be your problem there is just having too much.

    thanks for all the replies

ive tried all the combinations, and it looks like its either a problem with the 256 stick itself or the motherboard. ive checked the specs and it can use 256 sticks, with a max capacity of 768mb so all looks well. im going to try it out on a machine at home tomorrow night to rule out if its defective. it might be a mix and match prob but i didnt see it mentioned in the manual. the memory itself is brand new so im still a bit of a loss.

    all ideas still welcome
