It is a 2.5" drive in a small case.
    It is powered by USB.
there is one cable coming out of the HD case and it splits into 2 cables/usb connections(male) which go into the USB ports.
Never had a problem with it before.. I have it about 4 months.
It normally detects it straight away and it shows up in My Computer as
    "Portable Drive40 (F:)"

Now, windows is detecting it, but it seems like it is not assigning it a drive letter as it should and normally did.
The icon shows up in the bottom right and it says:
"Safely remove USB mass storage device"
    Where as it should say:
"Safely remove USB mass storage device - Drive (F:)"

I tried restarting, and tried to "Add new hardware", but no help.
As I said, this is the first problem I've had with it.

edit; oh yeah, there is power going to the drive because the light is on when it is plugged in.
    Any ideas?

On the off-chance that you've recently mapped a network drive that might now be F:, try unmapping/disconnecting it and see if it helps; it seems there's some sort of known issue with this.

If not, check the disk itself to see that it's okay; if your machine has more than one USB chipset (say motherboard USB and an external card) try it in both - I have a 2.5" enclosure that works in my USB2 card just fine (NEC chipset) but calfs on my onboard USB (VIA chipset)...

    Thanks for that but...
I just tried it in the GF's laptop and same symptoms as above.
I don't have any USB external card, so I cant try that.
But it did used to work perfectly. Dunno why it would just suddenly stop working..?
Haven't mapped anything nor installed any new drives either.

    Any more advice..?

    Thanks

Do you always "safely remove" the HDD before disconnecting?
Have you ever connected the drive to your GF laptop previously?

Try reinstalling all USB entries in Device Manager.

Not Always, but in the last few days, yes, I have.
And yeah, the drive was connected and working with my GF's laptop before.

    Thanks... Any other suggestions?

Is it picked up in disk management .
I had a similar problem where it was picked up but not in my computer. in disk management it read as being not partioned.
