    hi Guys

This is probably a bit premature this questions as I am only starting to watch DVD to see what ground is all about..and learning a little one to one off a buddy (watch this space!!!!! LOL!!!)

But on street situation would ground stuff have to be adapted to job you busting yourself up against concrete, tar roads, cement footpath etc.

like breakfalls ok a mat great, but if you fall on street and slap the ground to breakfall....ouch!!!!??!!

How would you change your game for the street to stop getting injured?

    any ideas , thoughts etc?

    Cheers

    G

here's an example i give when the STREET is brought up. ok lets say i'm teaching an escape from mount position (we worked a little bit on this gerry) well someone is bound to say

"yeah but what if his mate is kicking you in the head, or you're lying on glass etc etc"

well if you happen to be in this bad situation then its still the EXACT SAME ESCAPE BUT NOW ITS MUCH HARDER TO DO. just because you train on mats to keep your body in shape and not every class involves multiple opponents stomping your head etc if you can't escape a mount position in the gym against 1 person then if you are caught there in a street fight the laws of physics won't suddenly change. there's no magical escape that works in the street but won't work in a 'sport' environment.

of course no instructor should advocate pulling someone to the ground in a street fight - it should be obvious to use your stand up and clinch training to survive and escape at first option. but if some how you do end up on the ground and you do end up under mount well you better know your escapes. will it be harder to do with his mate kicking you in the head and you're lying on glass etc YES, surprisingly enough!! but the mechanics of the escape dont change from doing it in a bjj training session/competition

same escape, more intensity - i think this is how colm puts it.

    BJJ on the street?

Obviously the no.1 strategy is get back on your feet.

The only things i can think of our skinned knees and avoiding guard slams but neither of them are particularily relevent unless your fighting Royce Gracie on O'Connell St.
How would you change your game for the street to stop getting injured?
Wouldnt really to be honest. Or at least wouldnt invest time in training for the situation.

TBH, you're not going to a flying guard on the street to try bring someone down.. But let's say for example you've falling and some guy wants to run straight in and throw punches at you or kicks - You always have the ability to sweep him.. If you're in a bad position, like John said - You are aware of the escapes for it.. It's very useful..

good yes, I am starting to get the picture. I suppose the adreline , when you go into fight mode, would block out things like banging your knee on the ground.

I am now very impressed with ground fighting , and the escapes, like what John refers to , when he pinned me and I could not move. like wise in israel the KM guys there I could not stay on either nor pin them (they do 40% bjj in their training, they say its KM but its a mix of bjj, judo , wrestling, etc).

Plus now I know that ground work and locks and stuff, a great way to beat someone without busting them up with punches.

Right I shall keep my basic research work up and will have loads more questions.

    ok heres one....

is there much difference between bjj and wrestling?

Ive had the misfortune of doing the ground thing for real on two occasions. Some of the things that i learned (and i'm right at bottom of the ladder when it comes to this ground game malarky):

For a start the other party will unintentionally cover you in scratches just by digging their fingers into your arms/hands in blind panic, they arent used someone sitting on them. That really sucks when you think of dirty fingernails and diseases

tarmac is probably sore if you're not the one in control

that knee on stomach thing really works lol

any take down that involves dropping to one knee is inherently flawed on a hard surface

stuff will fall out of your pockets and/or break, especially your bloody raybans

People go on about HIS mates but you can feel real comfortable on the ground when its YOUR mates who are standing around.

Someone can have a weapon in their hand and not realise it or use it

You can take someone's shoe off them on the ground...weird.

"is there much difference between bjj and wrestling?"

    Objective

    wrestling - takedown and pin
    BJJ - submit

when you get good at grappling you will see the similarities between all the grappling arts judo, wrestling, bjj, sombo etc etc at the end of the day there is a best way to apply a choke, pin somebody, escape a pin, finish a single leg etc etc so it doesn't matter what you call it.

you take somebody with no grappling experience and try and teach them sombo for eg they would learn it a much slower rate than say someone who is already very accomplished in wrestling. they would already understand a lot of the underlying principles and would just have to get used to the new Objectives.

it would be the same with functional striking arts.

    "ok heres one....

Depends on the type wrestling i guess. Greco Roman and Freestyle seem to be more about takedowns/pins (dont know a whole lot about these two) but Catch (hook) Wrestling seems to be a very different kettle of fish, very similar to BJJ as regards subs, just different names (e.g. triangle choke=figure fore choke). Not too sure which came first though, the chicken or the egg :) . Google some of Tony Cecchines stuff, its pretty interesting...

Then of course theres the WWE which is always a giggle...
