"Norton Protected Files"

You know in Norton Systemworks when you right-click on "Norton Protected Recycle Bin" on the desktop and choose "Empty Norton Protected Files"?
Why is that doing this always frees up a lot of hard drive space?
There are often thousands of files to be deleted but their location is a mystery it would seem.
I have sometimes gained 5 or 10 GB from deleting these files. What exactly are they does anyone know? Does it do any harm to delete them?
    Just curious.

AFAIK it works just like the Recycle Bin, only it protects more files, such as saving files deleted over the network for example. It also saves a copy of a file whenever it is modified, which would explain why it can take up so much space. Google for more info.
