was lookin into this myself recently... from about.com...

The correct snowboard length depends on your riding style, height and weight.
Most people will need a board that hits them somewhere around the chin or mouth.
Deep powder or race boards will be longer; freestyle or trick boards shorter.
Riders heavy for their height can go a little longer (as well as stiffer likewise, riders light for their height can go shorter and with a softer flex.

    heres the rest:

I'm assuming you've boarded before? If not, you should try out different types of boards first to see what kind of board you like. Length and flex are some options to consider of course, but even very similar boards in terms of weight, flex, etc can have quite different 'feelings' on the snow. Also bear in mind the kind of snow you'll be on most regularly - nice deep powder, icy/grainy snow, packed snowpark/kicker snow, etc. If it's your first board, I'd say you're better off getting something relatively cheap so that if you do want to change soon after, you don't lose out much.

Size is definitely something you should experiment with...but generally a length up to between the chin or the nose is good.
I have a Burton 1.58 cruzer from about 3 season ago - still in pretty good nick, with custom bindings. I'm thinking of selling cos i don't think I'll get to go boarding this season. So if you're interested let me know.
Definitely a great board to get started with & progress a little too.
