ESB strike from tomorrow!

The trots are turning the clocks back as the ESB seeks to cut costs by outsourcing labour. the ATGWU have called a strike from tomorrow which won't effect actual power generation but will mean that if you loose power due to a line fault you can go swing.

    from iol.
A strike at the ESB is to go ahead tomorrow after talks aimed at resolving a dispute over the use of outside contractors failed to go ahead this morning.

Members of the ATGWU are to proceed with action from 8am tomorrow morning.

The strike was originally planned for today but postponed to allow for the talks, which the ESB subsequently withdrew from, saying they could not participate in talks until the threat of strike action was lifted.

ESB technicians claim apprentices at the company are being denied jobs due to the use of these contractors.

The strike will not immediately affect power supplies, but blackouts will be possible if the stoppage continues as technicians will not be available to repair breakdowns in the network.

    Mike.

Tonight's RTE News quoted the ESB saying that the annual salary for these Electrical Technicians is € 68,000.

FFS!! Not many jobs like that in the private sector.

If that's not public service/semi-state bloat I don't know what is.

You're right it's better to pay the CEO several million instead!

The big danger is that the staff in the generating stations could join in. That's when the fun will begin.
