Plasma or LCD

Kind of in a bind about what to get myself from Santa this year :)

I have a room for my pc's, music gear and so on. Looking more like an office then my office these days so I wan't to get something to entertain. Have a good couch on its way. Looking to get a flat screen tv to pop on the opposite the new seats.

Problem is the walls only maybe 5 feet, from where i'd be sitting. Tops. So I "think" 42 inch plasma is out of the question. Things would look to pixelated and it would be hard to watch from that close up.

So I'm looking at 32" LCD's. Not a huge amount of choice in this arena from Irish companys. And I would like to buy it here. The one I had my eye on was an LG.

Anyone got any opinions, or experience with this one. Or indeed others? 500:1 seems a bit dim for starters. Its a bright room...

Gonna be using it for gaming off an xbox360 when thats out. Sky, DVD's and PC gaming also.

Anyone seen any good 32" lcd tvs?

I've checked out offerings from most people and cant seem to find "the one". Has to be good for gaming, both from xbox 360 and the pc. So a higher res, good refesh rate, and high contrast.

I know there are some experts in here. Help a paddy out! :p

It's a new model, lots of functionality. Good resolution and refresh on her. And its black, lol

I know the price is right, believe me. Cash comes into it. But that is the older model, alot less features. Poorer response times for that ghosting of images you see on some lcds. Lower resolution. Less features like POP with sizing. Not really with the times as its missing some digital inputs, HDMI, DVI for your pc. Less future proof. But if those things aren't needed then go for it man. Kompletts cheapest I've seen and never had any issues with returning faulty stuff from em

If you take as a rule of thumb your viewing distance (HD screens) should be at least 1.5 times the distance of the screen size away then you should be fine.

a 37" plasma like the Panasonic 8 series should do a grand job.

Thanks for the views. i've changed my mind now as I had a look at a 32" and decided its a bit too small. I'm now looking at a 37" either LCD or Plasma. Any reccomendations? Komplett don't do plasma but their 37" LCD is pricey enough...also wondering if waiting until after christmas would be a good move as their might some bargains then!

Goto your local tv specialist and have a look at the screens, maybe bring a dvd with you of something fast moving, and ask them to hook up a HD DVD player and check the PQ.

Personally i don't think you can go wrong with the Panny 8 screens as advised here.

Shop around on prices as well, Saw a TH37PA50 in Harvey Norman for 2300 and online it was 1400 from here

Worth the saving, but do lots of research on any item you buy, search for it on www.avforums.com

If you want it for xbox 360 then it will have to be LCD.

As advised above you really need to see these tvs before purchasing as picture quality between models can be very different.

Be careful at the moment as alot of older models are being sold off cheap but they are techically inferior to the new LCD models arriving from Far East before Christmas.
Was in Sony Centre last week and just amazed at the difference in picture quality between older model LCD tvs and the new Bravia models on display beside each other.
