What are motorists supposed to do? If anyone knows the road, its Thomastown road going from SuperValu Killiney to Glenageary roundabout, the new road that has a ridiculously slow speed limit (it was 30mph, but the signs on the tar are scrubbed and there are no speed limit signs anywhere on the road)

Do we take the speed limit as 30mph/50kph or if a Gard stops me do I have a case saying that there is no speed limit given?

    Mike.

Town and city speed limits would be 50 km/h ie. built-up areas

National road speed limits would be 100 km/h ie. main roads, dual carriageways

Regional and local speed limitswould be 80 km/h .ie non national roads

the only 30km/h or 60km/h zones will be ones that will be clearly sign posted (as its a more constricting traffic calming, ie. schools or an accident prone area), if they are not "special limit zones" then the limit would be 50Km/h

    I find this one scary.

The tiny little roads around the Kerry wilderness have speed limits which vary from 80 - 100 km.

    Completely ridiculously dangerous.

This is the lowest national speed but local authorities have the right to introduce other limits from the usual 50, 60, 80, 100 & 120kmph limits. No authorities have used this yet but it is expected that Dublin City Council will bring in a 30kmph limit shortly for the inner city. Once they all start doing this it will really get confusing!

Legally speaking you are only advised of the speed limit on any road as a courtessy really. The by-law that governs that speed limit is a law like any other and like any other law, ignorance of it is not an excuse. Do as Mike advises-drive at a speed appropriate for the road and do not exceed the lowest standard limit of 50 km/h.
