Gun dogs - what's out there?

What are the hunting types out there using. Is it all springers and labs with a few pointers?

Does anyone shoot over non gun dog breeds or less common ones like german wire haired or other continental breeds?

I have a springer. A decent dog, but needs watching if there are hares about - then he thinks he's a long dog... He comes back easy if you call him inside the first 20m. After that it takes serious roaring to get him stopped, fear of god stuff.

I had hoped to use him in hides for pigeon, duck and what not but he's a bit of a whiner and nothing seems to be able to presuade him to change his ways (any tips on this?)

Having seen some wild springers and labs that flush birds far out of range I sometimes think it would be great to be able to shoot over a pointer. Something I have never done.

Are there good stocks of pointers and other breeds out there?
