I've been having this problem for weeks and its getting annoying now

In MS Word, say i chose a font arial 12, its dark like bold, and no option to lighten it, as you type the font looks strange ucan underlin but not distinguish between plain and bold, and changing font size doesnt help.
if I click the drop down arro to choose a font Arial is not there! or it is but its dark/bold there too (as separate from "Arial bold" )

    Help !

Can you post up a picture of the offending font..? Are the BUI buttons greyed out.

Are you using styles at all - it may be that the default style in your NORMAL.DOT (template) has gotten fecked up....

It could be to do with your your default printer. One time I had a dot matrix set up as my default printer and I couldn't change to any font other than Courier. Well the font name would change on the drop down list but the font in the document just looked like Courier no matter which font I selected.

not using styles, because i hate them !!
    have attached sample
its only my pc it seems (are networked)
only solution I've found is cutting my work and pasting in file open on other pc, crazy

Everything works fine for me,I can select bold and the font changes to bold.

Try adding a different printer (not dot matrix) and setting it as the default.

    yea ?

as far as I rem i can too on a different pc, so why not on this one !!
I think I've looked under every option there is

if I highlight a pice of that text and select bold there is no different in the text on screen, or as printed, it already appears as bold on my screen, everythign does .

I've just tried it and if i bold a part when i move to that text the bold button is indented but NO change to appearance

Did you try my suggestion about the printer?

I think it might be the styles - in the doc you put up everything is "Plain Text" by default, even though it displays as Arial, the text for that style is Courier, 10pt.

When you cut and paste the text on another PC, the styles arn't copied and the text will use the styles in the new document.

Try and copy the NORMAL.DOT file from the other PC to your own - this *might* solve the problem, if it's not the printer idea (never thought of that)

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot is the general location of the file

It doesn't matter how many printers you have set up, It's the default windows printer that can **** things up. So switch your default windows printer to something else and see if it makes a difference.

    copied a normal.dot file

    works with new word documents
but not when i open the old file or cut and past

I shuld maybe of been clearer this is only in Arial
if I change to Times New Roman its fine

but I do a lot of forms /study notes for classes and prefer arial
Arial in the font windo is dark(bold( same a s "arial bold" as an option

Could your font file be corrupt..? On my WIN2K machine the C:\WINNT\Fonts\Arial.ttf file is 359K dated 19/6/03....

Can you stick up an ALT+Prt Sc of the actual problem so we can see it (I'm running out of ideas.... )

Sorry HelterSkelter, I meant I have changed the default printer often , with no difference

Attached two print screens, the underlined word (criteria0 is in bold the rest in palin,a s you can see no difference, nor when its printed.

the second screen shot, simply has the cursor on criteria to show the BOLD button "on"

I deffo think its a style problem. I found lots of good info here but as I can't see your settings you're going to have to do a bit of digging yourself.

    Good luck!
