I'm in a bit of a rush, so I'm going to assume you're studying computer science or a related area. I got the prize for best final year project, and here's how I decided on what to do:

Pick technologies that you want to learn about
    Pick lots of them
Think of something that will allow them all to interact

Bingo, you have research and implementation. It's important that there's some academic aspect to a final year comp. sci. project. It's the difference between a 1:1 and a 2:1.

    My own project used:
    apache
    vb
    java
    perl
    linux
    access
    mysql

I put in about 50-60 hours a week in fourth year, but it was all worth it with hindsight.
