Any ideas on what to use?

Can you not just restrict access to those that use it?

Just restrict the access to the folder to a specfic user group.

    How?

Being a pupil, I'm sure he won't have admin rights
As far as I know, there isn't really any way you can do this, without asking your network admin to do it for you.
If it was windows 98, then you could have set a html file as your window back ground, and use a javascript password request. But 1) it's windows 95 and 2) you'd be able to see the password from looking at the source file. But it wouldn't keep the non tech-savvy out.

    I actually have administrator pass.
And address me instead of assuming.
I have admin rights, i have all the permission i want as i am trusted in my school.
Ive tried a lot of software to password protect folders but they are all trials.

    Off topic i think.

    Id like to add,

I locked the folder on winlock.
but all of the password protect folder apps i have got only lock on that particullar PC.
Thats what i cant get by.

    just hide it

    :p

If i hide it, all you have to do is ''Show hidden folders''

    :(

You have the admin pass? So assuming its an NT network where people login into pcs with their usernames you can set certain names to access a drive or certain folders.

If you have admin you should know this

On the server right-click on the folder and go to properties, there should be options for sharing and security (the exact options depend on the version of windows). If not you may need to 'disable simple file sharing', I can't remember how exactly but googling those 4 words should show you.

I'm assuming that the server isn't Win95/98 here btw.

So who do you want to have access to these folders?
Btw are you the admin or have you just obtained the password, as the admin would do this in about 4 seconds.

Iam not the admin who runs the thing, i had the password for installing winlock and spyware blockers etc.
Iam not actually a network specialist.
i help out at the school for the website and any new teachers PCs that come in.
But i was asked to reinstall a game for everyone after some eejit deleted it.
No point putting it in if its gonna be deleted again.

I suppose id need to have access to the folders but its not essential.
Install the game, create a shortcut to the game and lock it up.

What type of network are you running?

    peer to peer or client/server?

And then what OS are you using with to support the server backend if thats what you are doing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,715 ✭✭✭marco murphy

    Oh..iam not very sure.
    Its not P2P anyway ;)

So i guess its the other one, server ;)

All the PCs are XP now:)

What is the SERVER os... I need to know that before I can give anything but vague random advice.

"If a tree falls in a forest and we've already sold it, can it be *our* fault?"

I'm also a student admin for my school network (only one ;) and we use all win2k boxes with win2k server with active directory and group policy, quite effective IMO)

    *tut tut tut*

Our school is quite secure that way, the entire staff network is kept on seperate servers and seperate cabling/switches even, but when you have access to the comms room its not an issue, or the staff network

Is it possible that a server could be in the hub?
Sorry, this has annoyed me for 4 years now.
    I will just ask.
I am pretty sure its xp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 804 ✭✭✭TimTim

    No.

4 years is a long time to figure out a fairly trivial thing (I would of thought anyway)

    You go do that.

There is no XP server OS. Maybe XP for the clients.

    Whats a client even :P
    :(

I just know we had to go round all the PCs entering in..IPs and gateways..DNS?
Dont even know what it is :S

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I really can't understand why they gave you the admin password. anyone can install a few programs with no problems...

I'm gonna advice you to get one of the Networking for dummies books, I found it to be a great introduction into networking, client/server basics. It focuses mainly on home networks but anywhere is a good start...

When you've done a bit of reading up on networking, pm me back and i'll give you a dig out, until then it would be impossible to help you out until you gave some more details on the network.

    Also, DHCP ftw.

    Hi,

let me see if i understand this right.
You want to protect a folder in windows on 1 computer, because someone deleted it?
Previously it was deleted on that computer, right?
I dont think it was deleted through your network from students-acc otherwise your admin has no clue (or half the school knows the admin password).
Log on admin install your game and set to read only, maybe the save folder to full access.
If an admin deletes it no1 can help you, students shouldnt have the right after you set it to read only for them (wich is default on servers for guests or users).

    regards

    Get away!!!!

    Right.
The folder is on the network so every PC can see it.

    I forgot to add.
I dont know if its right or wrong but the teacher refers to the hub as the server...thats what confuses me.

    Also,
Just because i have an admin pass doesnt mean i should know how to do this.
So far not one of you have given me a solution so how can you tell me i am not able to do it :p

Iam allowed into the server later my teacher says.
So ill let you all know.

It should be fairly simple, on the server (whichever machine the folder is actually on), right-click on the folder and go to properties. There should be a tab for 'Security', or maybe 'Sharing and Security'. This should give you a list of who's able to access the folder and what access they have. Select the Student user and down below make sure that they have read access only (maybe execute too). They should not have write access or 'full control'. That'll let them access the files without deleting/overwriting them, altough if the game needs to write to the files for some reason it'll fail.

What if i install a password protect folder app on it?
