The Trendline was kind of a sports spec model in the MkIV Golf, I think. It had sports seats and trim, sports lowered suspension, front fog lights and tinted rear lights.

The Comfortline had velour seats and door trim, electric windows all round, electric mirrors, front arm rest, trip computer and higher spec stereo system.

Best avoid the 1.4 as it struggles in the heavy Golf body.

Also watch out for knotchy gearboxes as this was a common problem in the 98 - 04 Golf.

You can read more about the Golf at http://www.honestjohn.co.uk

    Cheers, I'll have a look.

Whats the story with timeing belts on Golfs? Im looking at a 01 with 48k on the clock. NCT is done but needs a service.

01 Comfortline lines have velour seats, electric window's all round, electric mirrors, lighting package, height adjustable front seats and head rests in the back. Mine also has an arm rest but I'm not sure if that's standard.

As one of the previous replys stated the gearbox isn't great. I have a 1.4 engine which is slow especially front take-off and also if your carrying extra passengers. However if you are the sole occupant it should be fine. The diesel engine are good however the insurance will be more expensive and its Eur551 to tax a 1.9 diesel.

Timing belt will need to be changed at 60k miles. There's almost 51k on mine however I'll be changed in the new year so I won't have the pleasure of visiting my friendly VW dealer.

    I don't think so.

I would go with the Comfortline if I were you (and I've owned two Golf GTIs so I do like the sports variant of the Golf). The Trendline is very scabby with extras... ok you get the seats and the tinted lights but the lights you could pick up for next to nothing. With the Comfortline you get elec windows, arm rest etc. over the Trendline.

    Lol yes,

My ex used to have one and it was like driving a tank. If your going for a 1.4 stick to something a bit lighter.
