Formating Text in Word - (bar footnote numbers)

Is there any way you can format text in word and exclude formating on those small footnote reference numbers?

Yeah, when you format the page it only formats the content as opposed to headers & footers. You have to explicitely go into Headers & Footers to change the text and formating of them.
