Region free DVD drives in laptops?

I am about to buy a laptop (my first ever laptop) and the ACER 5021 seems to be a well balanced computer. Now, I have a question regarding the DVD driver fitted in laptops. Are they region free?
I am asking that because I am about to leave Ireland for good in a couple of months to move to the other end of the planet. ACERs are covered by a 1 year "Collect and Return" warranty as well as an "International Travelers Warranty": I can benefit from the former while in Ireland and from the latter while abroad.

I thought that all laptop DVD drives would be region free as a laptop is supposed to be used anywhere on the planet but I am starting to doubt that as I found some hacks on the web for laptop DVD drives.

The Majority of laptop dvd drives have the same rules as any other dvd drive , you get to change the region coding 5 times , whatever you change it to on the fifth time , thats what you are stuck with ,
Yes it is assumed laptops travel , but for work purposes only , watching movies is not considered work though , unfortunately. You can still burn dvd's ( if its a writer ) and you can still access dvd rom , but movie playback will be limited to discs coded for the region you set it too on the fifth time.

You havnt bought the laptop yet , so you should have no problem , when you reach your final destination just set it to the correct region and you should be fine.

It seems this software is the fix to play any dvd in your laptop:

Yeah I had the same enquiry. I bought this software...

    http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free-lite.htm

which cost me less than €20. It has free lifetime upgrades, this charge is a once-off. It is excellent, works with pretty much any DVD software, running in the background, I've never had a problem with is and I've been using it for 2 years now. I even bought a new laptop, and downloaded it onto that as well using the original reg key.

    Well worth it IMO
