I am going for a fender strat as my next instrument.

I want something that has a great solid clean tone from the bridge pickup, but can also output some nice distortion aswell (Biffy Clyro esque)

I can get a mexican strat for about 450 euro.

Would anyone recommend or disprove of them?

    Thanks

Yes. Everyone should have at least one strat, and I mean everyone, not just musicians. Classic instruments.

This seems to be insanely good value. Do it. Do it now :)

    Dear Dr J,

Do you know is that one you link to made down south of the border, down Mexico way? Or someplace even more exotic?

Is does look nice especially in that finish with the black fixin's.

    EDIT: sorry to go O/T.

Not sure if you're asking or telling but it's mexican I think from the 'MN'. From reading the stratocaster cronicles, seems that US strats are made entirely in the US whereas mexican ones are a mix from the US factory and the mexican one.

    If you telling, sorry! :o

    I was asking ;)

EDIT : I thought the MN would stand for Maple Neck

Yea just go for a fat strat, and make sure u try it out, i heard some fenders they suck i heard some and they rock, so i was always undecided Just get a fat strat for the most versatily, u cant go wrong with them :) u can always pair it with the mid single coil for some nicer cleans

    Incorrect. It's made in Korea.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

I think it's Korean or Japanese, actually, I can't see a new US strat going for that money tbh. Still, check out the birdseye maple neck

Edit -> Just saw Ravelleman's post, and had a gander through FDP and Korean seems to be the consensus. Not a bad thing, tbh, there's nought to grumble about with Korean guitars, not at all.

Ooops :o Back to the books for me so...

Consider a G&L Legacy. Pick one up for $500 or so. Check out www.guitarsbyleo.com

I knew it the whole time!!!

I looked up Lite Ash Strat on Harmony-Central and it does seem to be made in Korea and cost €499. Very good reviews on the whole.

Sorry. I can however offer lifetime membership of the "if i buy enough guitars, i'll eventually play like a god" society though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

Well, I like the sound of that but for the wife and kids sake I feel I have to ask: how many is "enough"?

For a while I didnt like the strat..probably cuz I started on a Squier. Then I saw what our good man Rory Gallagher could do with one of those babies. Howl.

just to say you have a cracking taste in music, one of simons strats (the 3-tone sunburst) is a modified made in mexico strat, with one of the single coils removed. he doesn't use it as much as his more expensive fenders like his relics (salmon red and the charcoal frost colour strats) but you can't go wrong with a strat.

This is a nice bargain in a strat.

To right, They're my favorite band by a longshot, although i do like nine black alps.

Are you going to see them in Galway on the 9th December?
We saw them there in april. they nearly brought the place down out of it they rocked so much! excellent. 10/10

    It's $499 plus $100 shipping plus import duty @ 4% and VAT @20%

Oh-oh...now you've done it, bartonprince. Welcome to the instruments forum. This is where you will spend the rest of your days. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 829 ✭✭✭Bartonprince

haha,. well i've always been a Ibanez, Jackson, ESP custom man.... Never really realised that they tripped up on the clean tones, the fenders seem to give a more versatile sound then the full EMG81' distortion..

I'm switching to the dark side now so i want the best guitar at the cheapest price. I have a budget of 450. How much would i pickup a second hand strat relic for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,433 ✭✭✭Quattroste

It should work out at 520euro give or take a few quid. You shouldn't pay duty and vat on the shipping. Thats a very good price for a USA strat.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 829 ✭✭✭Bartonprince

How long would delivery take etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭nadir

My fav jpop band ZONE, (which are no more) had some signiture guitars made.
check out these Strats, these are the hanabi models

    http://www.fender.jp/hanabi/

there is also an Akashi model, I really want to get one of these Hanabi's, they would have been issued around 2002. I may try to pick one up in japan and /or a Tokai.

You shouldn't but you will. Import duty is gauged on the cost of the instrument plus the cost of shipping.

What do you guys this of the Fender Cyclone? The baby blue one with the White stripe across the base?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

  Thats fcuking outragous!. How the fcuk can they charge vat on shipping. Its a seperate cost to the guitar and its less than 175 euro.

That's it. I'm adding them to my list of people I don't like. There. Done!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Yeah, it's a bummer alright. They take the fun out of everything.

Over here? Cheapest US strat I've seen recently here was about €600 I think. If you find any for €450, give me a shout ;)

I did see one for ?450 in the B&S...great until I realised the '?' stood for stg£ :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

No, I can't see you getting a US one for less than €650 or thereabouts.

Don't dismiss non USA models, any (especially the Japanese ones which are frequently better) are at least as good as the American ones. Have a look at the link to the Lite Ash strat I put up. That is as good as you're going to get for the money you are willing to spend.

Edit -> It also comes in white and black

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 829 ✭✭✭Bartonprince

Doctor J. Do you have one of those yourself? Can you post some pics or a sound sample from the bridge pickup with distortion?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

put a humb. in the bridge

They have that exact one in my local music store and it's 749 euro!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭kennier

Seeing as Tokais are so popular, what about a springy? They've got a bit of a cult following (not as much as the reborn/love rock though :p )...
