New digital TV firm for Munster

SOUTH Coast Television has launched an independent digital television company for the Munster area, SCTV Digital, and is giving its 16,000 existing subscribers the opportunity to invest in the new company.

SCTV is a community-run company which broadcasts a multi-channel analogue TV service to Co Cork and West Waterford. It wants to raise €1.5m in its private share offering for the digital service and one share costs €300.

Chief executive Eric Curtis believes the company will be worth over €6m by 2009. It plans to offer a 60-channel digital TV and radio package and a s community channel.

60 channels - in this day and age. I'd say Sky are shaking in their boots!

meh, how many channels do you need
I have 70 and most of them are pointless garbage.

if they're cheaper than sky they'll do ok.

SCTV will be cheaper than Sky, if their promises when they first floated the digital service are kept. Then a price of around E15 per month was mentioned, but you could expect this to reach E20 at launch.

    60 isn't that much.

Thats what Chorus has. And i would like a few more.
    About 80 is really enough..

Give me 20 QUALITY TV channels anyday over the HUNDREDS you get on Sky.

    Religion
    Shopping
    Dating
    Psychic
    ????????????

The 5 British main channels, 4 Irish main channels...a couple of news/sport/music/documentary/childrens and your done!

I have access to about 12 Sky Movies channels and NEVER watch them...total waste of money...then again I dont pay the Sat bill!

But that's around the same price as DMMDS - what's the difference?

I've just found out that this thing will transmit on Ten Gigahertz (satellite band?). Isn't is just MMDS then - and didn't SCTV say a long time ago that MMDS was craP/

It is MMDS. SCTV won't call it that, obviously since they and the other deflectors have spent a lot of time trying to obstruct Chorus and their predecessors (rather than competiting on price like normal companies). They call it "digital television transmission" (trying to convince people it is DTT, when it isn't). But MMDS it is.

I'm looking for a word for that......em......hypocritical? I wonder if the people who supported the protests against MMDS in the 90s will take up the cosh again now? SURELY Ten Gighert is way more dangerous than the old MMDS frequency. Or maybe it's only a health hazard when the Cable people tried it? Interesting, to say the least......
