    wot does nap mean?

Nap - The term someone uses to describe their best bet of the day. Also the name of the card game - from the earlier English expressions 'go to nap' and 'go nap', meaning to stake all of the winnings on one hand of cards, or attempt to win all five tricks in a hand, derived originally and abbreviated from the card-game 'Napolean' after Napolean III (N.B. Napolean III - according to Brewer - not Bonaparte, who was his uncle).

Hi Sharp. If a horse is Placed, it means he has come first, second or third in the race.
(He can also come fourth in handicap races with 16 or more runners)
If the race has 7 or runners or less, only the first two past the post are considered placed.

There are not many bookies that let you bet on a horse to be placed. Unless the bookie is offering a special bet, you can only really do it is on the exchanges (such as betfair).

However, Bookies will let you do a placepot, where you pick six horses, all in different races, and if each of them are placed, you get a payout.

Bookies will also allow what is called 'Each Way' betting. This is basically 2 bets in one, so a €1 each way bet will actually cost you €2.
The first part of the bet is the regular win bet, and the second part of the bet is for the horse to be placed. The payout on the win part of the bet will be at the horses price, and the payout on the place bet is as follows:

Handicaps of 16 or more runners:
1/4 odds for the first four places

    Handicaps of 12-15 runners
1/4 odds for the first three places

All other races of 8 or more runners
1/5 odds for the first three places

All races of 5, 6 or 7 runners
1/4 odds for the first two places

    Hope this makes some sense:)

Thanks V Much for the info Wbailey.

Had some one trying to explain it to me over a few pints during cheltenham kept thinking he talking about a Yankey. He kept repeteing PLACE PLACE didn't mention placepot his explaination was as clear as mud.

Just so I got it. Its an each way acumulator and if even one of your horse is not placed your bunched.

    Thanks again.

    Yes and No.

Yes in the sense that if any of your selections are not placed, the whole bet is down.

But a placepot is different than an each way accumulator. Don't forget that an each way bet is two bets - a place bet, and a win bet. That is why it costs double.

-In a placepot, all horses must be placed. simple as that. It makes no difference if they are first or third or whatever.

In an each way accumulator, there are two bets going on. The first is all of the hosres to win, and the second is for all of the horses to be placed.

    A €5 placepot will cost €5, but a €5 e/w accumulator will cost €10.

It is kind of hard to explain, but once you get your head around each-way betting, you will see the difference.
