Need A Camera- Where Do I Start?

Been talking for years about getting into photography but I really don't know where to start. All I really know is that I don't want a digital camera, so I guess that means 35mm. I've come up with one particular model- the Nikon F55- and I'm led to believe its particularly suitable for beginners. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

Bought my missus and my mother f55 cameras, yes they are very good as a first film camera, nice auto features and manual controls very accessable too.

what do you think you want to take picures of and what is your budget?

I've a budget of a couple of hundred, I guess. As for subject matter, I expect people and landscapes. Anything where the light changes. I'm looking for something that I can get good black & white shots out of.

A nikon would be a good start. They haven't changed the lens fitting since day 1, so you can use almost all of the lenses from the last 40 years, some of which are fantastic, on even the new cameras, including the DigiSLRs.
My girlfriend (who's a proper photographer) wanted to get me a camera for my birthday last year. I had in mind to get the F55, but when we went to a camera shop for a look, there was a used F801 for only €40 more. Compared to the it, the F55 felt like a crisp packet.
I went for the F801 in the end and I love it. It can do fully auto, fully manual and everything in between.
If you can find a good used Nikon from a reputable shop, you'll be made up. I guarantee it.
