I'm out of the music business nearly 4 years now, and though once brilliant, I'm not a bit out of touch! A potentially hot demo has landed in my hands and I have to get this guy out to the world- any ideas what I can do next? The Hot Press Yearbook is on the way, but I need names and recommendations- A&R, labels, recording studio, promotion etc. Thanks.

That singer songwriter stuff that so popular right now, but with more of an edge. Melodic, good tunes and well-written songs, really great voice. Think David Gray, Ryan Adams, Keane... that sort of thing.

mention him here for a start.
Upload the demo somewhere for people to download it.
Tell us where and when he's playing etc..
Word of mouth is the best sort of promotion any artist can get.
Then again, if you were in the business, I would have expected you to know that....

Yeah, but I was a Press Officer for established, well-known acts. I wouldn't know the first thing about getting an artist off the ground and I've lost contact with all my previous contacts when I did the career switch. I could really do with a bit of advice.

stick your artist in with other ones in events like garagelands or whatever it's called. pimp him/her on forums (via the medium of mp3) and on sites like mp3.com and myspace.com

the label stuff you should know about already
