Does anyone find Des Bishop funny ? I think he has about as much wit as an
unflushed toilet. Sure, his delievery is imbued with great energy and ethusiasm
but thats about as far as his act goes as far as I am concerned. He claims that he is here to observe the Irish and find humour in us. Observational comedy ?? A taxi driver would have more observational comedy that this guy. What do people think ?

He is legend, I have lived in the states for a while so I can see where he is coming from.

Can't say his 'brand' of humour appeals to me very much to be honest.

Yeah, I think he can be very funny. Was watching him on RTE2 last week and laughed alot. But its peoples taste I suppose. I wouldnt like Jason Byrne much where others might. Or I think Ken Dodd :o is gas while others don't!

I thought the Work Experience programme was great, but his stand-up isn't terribly good.

On one hand he proposses to help poor people in underpriviledged areas. On the other hand he uses them as material by patronising them and undermining them on stage.

Personally I think he's an unfunny arsehole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭electric69

I think a pretty funny guy...he is a hell of a lot funnier than that Ricky Gervais guy from "The Office"....cant stand him....i'd prefer watch paint dry than listen 2 him!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭Crucifix

    I enjoyed the work experience, but I don't think he's a good stand-up comedian.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

that work expeience show was ok
    his stand up is brutal
he was on RTÉ 1 this morning and was a pain in the arse

I think he's the most unfunny, banal excuse for a comedian around.

    he has his moments.....

    Never found him particularly funny.
And that cringe inducing white boy rapping he does (if he still does it?)make's Vanilla Ice sound like N.W.A.

    I think he's brilliant.

Not funny. He has his own cult of follows kind of like the frames in their hayday that won't hear no wrong about him. I find him brutally unfunny, sarcastic and insulting. Sure throw in an american accent and we can all do that.

He has been around for ages as well so this american blow in routine is rubbish. Go home find a job ya bum.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

Yeah he's been here over 10 years hasnt he?

Some of his stuff is great, some of it is brutal but overall i find him amusing enough to watch.

    He has his moments.
But for the most part he's utter fscking shíte.

perfectly summed up. the american blow-in routine is flogging a dead horse and is cringing to listen to at this stage.

I think he is HILARIOUS!But am thinking that he couldnt make a living in any other country because all he talks about is ireland.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 719 ✭✭✭CrimE

Yeah I think hes a legend personally. ALways good for a laugh :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Laguna

I liked him in the Des Bishop Work Experience, but I don't think he's a talented comedian. I think his main draw in this country is the fact that he's an American pointing out the oddities of the Irish. I get the feeling if he was English that no one would like him at all, because all the Irish would stand up and say "**** off tan".

Yes he's funny, the work experience programme was good too.

for someone who was complaining about bishop being insulting you sure did contradict yourself there, "Go home find a job ya bum" .. classy. how do you find him insulting by the way, just out of curiosity?

He's brilliant. Work experience was fantastic, stand up not as good, but still watchable. Can't say much bad about him really, but thats just my opinion

And for the record, I personally think Tommy Tiernan is about as funny as watching paint dry, don't know what the big deal with him is...

Couldn't agree more, he just gets up and shouts at the top of his voice.

I think my favourite stand up comedian is a close call between Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor..

Dave Chappelle is by far the greatest i have ever seen. he should be on tv more often over here

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,139 ✭✭✭Sauron

I think Des can be quite funny sometimes... but he isn't one of the best around by a long shot..

    Agreed,

everyone should import his Chappelle Show DVDs.

Absolutely brilliant, miles better than any comedian mentioned in this thread.

I think he's great. I like the angle he comes at. His impressions are spot on also. Tommy Tiernan on the other hand, i find as funny as a hat.

Think he's pretty good, although some of that material on the show during the week was pretty cringworthyly (that's not even a word!) bad, but every comedian has moments like that.

The work experience show was great though. Especially the Aberekebara (sp?) one.

He makes me laugh. Standup and TV show included.

he made me laugh so much I cried. Maybe I just caught a good show.
Did anyone else see the Setanta sketch? (why was that so funny?)

    SACRILEGE

I like Des Bishop, hated him when he was on "dont feed the gondolas" but, like Dara O'Breen I think hes improved an unbelievable amount over the years. funniest comedian in Ireland at the moment imo

I've seen some pretty funny hats! Funnier than either Tommy or Des anyway.

He oscillates between being funny and annoying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 620 ✭✭✭Spider_Baby!

I think hes hilarious, i loved both stand-ups ive seen him do, the tv show was pretty good, but sorta dragged on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

I've seen his show every year at the Cat Laughs festival and I've been to his shows in Dublin too. I found them very very funny. Although I find that he performs better in a smaller venue than in the likes of Vicar St. IMO, Jason Byrne is Irelands funniest comedian

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭bloke

Would agree that he "oscillates". Between funny / not funny / annoying / condescending. He has made me laugh. He has also made me froth at the mouth at his arrogance. The American Blow in thing has got very old, especially the "you all drink too much" thing. I may however be biased, having just returned from the pub...

The immersion joke, while over-used and old, cracks me up. It's genuinely funny, and true observational comedy.

Jason Byrne, on the other hand, has *never* made me laugh, and *always* annoyed me. He generates a lot of noise and energy, and that's it. I can only hope that people don't judge our culture on his "humour" and he plays down being Irish when abroad... some hope :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Laguna

I don't get Jason Byrne's style of humour, it's like the guy above me said, the energy's there, but no laughs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

While I'm not shocked that there are people who enjoy him, I am kinda suprised that there are some people here claiming he's the best comedian in Ireland. That's just wrong. Fair enough, we've quite a lot of brutally unfunny comedians (Stand up Dave McSavage) around, but at the same time we do have quite a few excellent comedians.

Personally, I think the criminally under-rated Kevin McAleer is a shining example of comedy in Ireland, his painfully dry yet dulcet tones lend themselves to the style of comedic storytelling he does live and he appears so downright serious that half the time you're really not expecting a punch-line, or the kind of absurdidity he comes out with. I know some people absolutely hate him with a passion, which kinda makes it all the better.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 213 ✭✭HarryHoudini

I'm still trying to form an opinion of him, I absolutely hated him on don't feed the gondalas, when he used to make up these really terrible raps about politicians and stuff like that, I cringe every time I think about it.
His TV show was pretty good, made me hate him less than I did initially.
I then seen him down in Kilkenny at the Cat Laughs before last and I have to say I found him quite funny. I don't think he'll ever develop much of an audience outside of the following he has at the minute, he doesn't seem to have the range that someone like Tommy Tiernan has.
Best comedian in Ireland gong at the minute has to go to Karl Spain, seen him loads of times, the man is sharp as a razor, I've never seen anyone put down a hecler so fast, he's a class act, watch his new TV show tomorrow at 10:30 on RTE 2, last weeks was excellent.

Meh, he can be funny at times, seen him live once and on t.v. a couple of times. He is ok but seems to re-use material a bit too much.
