I was playing one of these lovely things in Musician today and I pretty much made up my mind that I want one. Only thing is I dont know much about Tube amps. I need an amp that can withstand a good bit of movement, would a tube amp be up for a bit of rough and tumble or are they very delicate animals? And what are tubes like to replace? Could I do it myself or would I end up fried next to my amp?

    Cheers.

Well, so long as you're not booting them around the place they should be okay to be honest. I have no idea about changin them, but others will eb more knowledgable.

Here's everything you ever needed to know about the HRDx. It's an "unofficial" but one of the most authoritative sites about the HRDx.

Shoot.....that tells me it doesnt have alot of clean headroom. Bah!

Considered a deville? Or a Peavey Classic 30 (very similar to the hot rods, better imo)

De Villes are just that little bit too expensive, je pense.
Wouldnt mind one though.. I think I'll wait til I can suss out
a Valve King, reportedly better than the classic.

Dunno about better. Seems to be higher gain and cheaper though.

Cheaper ist gut, ja? I just hope one of the music shops gets one in!

    Cheaper isn't always good!

Well, yeah, but a bit less expensive doesnt necesserily mean "cheaper", if you catch my drift.

Are Hot Rod Deluxes quite portable? As in: can be carried by one person, possibly even take it on a bus with you?

well according to fender's site the hot rod deluxe is 45 pounds, so that's about 20 kilos or 20 bags of sugar or a big sack of potoatoes.

i don't know about you but i wouldn't want to be moving it very far, but it can be done i suppose

It's not that heavy really, my monitor weighs more than that and it doesn't have a handle.

well, i'm just thinking that if you're walking around with an amp you're going to walking around with a guitar in the other hand. it's not something i'd like to do a lot,

20 kilos isn't heavy but when it's in one hand for a certain time frame you're arm does get tired

If you're going to be moving it frequently you could put a few castors on it and push it.

That's why it's called the "Hot Rod" series. ;)

If you want more headroom either consider a different amp or swap out the tubes for ones with less gain factor. But the HRDx is a powerful animal and there's plenty of headroom as it is there. Mine starts to break up around 4, and 4 is already perversely loud.

Perversely as in "This is a club and the drummer is throwing sticks at me!" loud? :P

Yes, and that's always a good thing. ;)

I've just spoken to my guitar teacher about it and Roger from Musicain. Inc and I've almost made up my mind on getting one.

    I'm so bloody fickle!
