iBook problem

My brother's iBook G3 800 boots to a blank screen (after Apple chime). I tried to get into the OpenFirmware, but couldn't.

I believe the hard-drive is dead (there's an odd sound from that corner of the laptop)... but would this explain why I can't get into OpenFirmware?

I don't want to go to the bother of replacing the hard-drive if this isn't the problem... 'tis a right pain in the ass on the iBooks!

have you tried the diagnostics on the OS X cd?

pop the cd in, hold the option key as it boots and you get
    hardware diagnostics.

I wouldn't have thought the hard drive would affect the openfirmware.

If there was a problem with the Hard drive, the screen should still appear with a question mark flashing as it is trying to find your OS on your Hard drive.
Yeah I'd suggest using the Apple Hardware Test that's on your CD that came with the machine.

if the HD is dragging the IDE bus it may cuase it not to boot.

What about trying an OS X setup cd, or perhaps a bootable Linux distro?

I'd be inclined to suggest that you remove the hard disk if you suspect it's borked, and if it is the problem you'll get a flashing icon in the middle of the screen asking where the system folder is (you'll recognise it when you see it).

Unfortunately, you'll have to dismantle the lappie to test this theory...?

I'd also test the RAM if you can - say with another lappie?
