I'm sure you must all be rightly p___d off with us college newbies askin for advice on what laptops to buy.

But hey one more wouldn't hurt now, would it?

I was planning on getting the Acer Aspire 5024 but have been put off the the various responses I get here, seeing as its sporting a 64bit Turion it could prove troublesome with my lame programming attemps. So I suppose I'm looking for something on par with the 5024, but there is just too much to choose from. I was hoping all your biasedness towards your own brand will help me choose.

So I put it to you now, out of the thousands of laptops out there what should I buy? How does Pentium M with Centrino messure up the the beast that is P4? How much would DDR2 boost my lappies performance? And how do they get the figs into the figrolls??

If you can answer these questions I'll....I'll....I'll get back to you about what I'll do.

    Thanks in avance,
    esmurph

Go with the 5024, as this the direction that things are going you might as well get a handle on things sooner rather than later.

If you are running an 32bit OS it should make no odds as to what laptop you get, although I know little about programming, and absolutely nothing about 64bit processors... :)

If you like the Acer go with the Acer. Personally I like Dell, because they have been good to me and their prices are right, but Acer seem to be pretty good machines from what I have heard.

Dont touch a P4 in a laptop, the P-M matches up well: I'm sure if you get a 2ghz or greater P-M you would be hard pressed to notice a difference between it and a top o'the line P4. A Centrino is a P-M with an intel wlan card.

    DDR2? Blah, aside from benchmarks...

First, a Turion 64 will have no effect on ur programming. It's probably the best chip to have in a laptop and it will behave and run programs the exact same as the P-M. Dont believe Intel propaganda about AMD chips not running the same.

The P-M compares very favourably with the P4. Spanks it for gaming, power consumption and heat, but takes a bit of a dive in media encoding and multi tasking. The Athlon 64 and the P-M are very similar chips aside from the 64 bit-ness of the Athlon.

As for DDR2, forget about it. what a waste of money.

thanks for all the advise. I'm kinda growing out of the AMD 64 idea and liking the P-M more and more. Was in PC world just there, looking at a HP1355 1GB RAM 100GB HD 1.73Ghz P-M etc.... @ €1349

Wat do ya think? Unfortunatly its only a 14" screen. But other than that it look perfect.

    Cheers,
