Had a problem like this occur by a fella I know a few months ago. Couldn't figure out why no matter what he did AVG always said it was out of date. Brought it to me to suss it out and it turned out he had his clock/calendar set to the right time and date but to the year 2006. Made AVG think it was twelve months out of date :D So anyway I'd suggest checking the calendar of your machine to see if it thinks it is the future as well. Tis an easy thing to overlook.

Ok, I presume it is AVG7 free version we are speaking of here isn't it? Just to confirm what exact version and virus database you have, could you open control centre and double click where it says 'Internal Virus Database'. Confirm that your info corresponds to the figures in this image.
    AVG.jpg
I updated AVG just this minute to make sure these figure correspond to the most recent updates. Also have a look in the 'About' section and see if it corresponds to this:
    AVG2.jpg
If you have the same version then I too am baffled but if not there may still be some updates you haven't received yet (update server can be flaky at times). You could also manually download updates from www.grisoft.com and update from a folder rather from the internet. If this update option(folder) doesn't appear your need to change a setting in the Update Manager of Control Centre, untick 'Do not ask for the update source'.
hope something I have said is of use to you.

I've had this a few times.

Would help if you said what O.S. you were using so I'll just assume XP

    ok
1st reboot your comp and press 'F8' You will eventually boot to an options screen. Theres multiple choices on there from Safe mode etc. Select 'Start from Last Known Good Configuration'. (Only works if you haven't got 'System Restore' switched off).

2nd - Just try re-installing - Don't un-install just overwrite. If it's not a sneaky virus got in, it should work. Wiping and re-installing won't in this situation.

3rd If that hasn't worked un-install and delete the grisoft folder generally in C:\progrm files\grisoft,. You also need a reg cleaner, I use 'Registry Mechanic' but another option is 'Reg CleanerXP' for xp users or Reg Cleaner for all other users. Clean any AVG setting out of there. Also on unistall ensure you remove the virus vault etc (It will ask you!).

Re-install from afresh then. If you still get the 'Out of Date' message then you could have got one of the few virus's that can trick AVG. There's not many that can, only a couple but in that case your options are, use 'Panda Anti Virus Online Active Scan' or a Free copy of 'Avast Anti Virus'. Either one should catch what it is.

Certain Spyware can cause this to happen also. Run a full scan with Spybot and Ad-Aware - make sure you get the latest updates first). Actually a good way of checking if it is a virus is to try updating Ad-Aware, if it is, Ad-Aware suffers the same problem as AVG does sometimes. Updating AVG via either Internet or Folder will not work either way.

If none of those options work then change your main drive to a slave (You'll need to use a spare drive with an os on it for this as a master drive obviously) and then scan the drive. Any thing that is hiding will be caught straight away like this. Had it happen week before last on a friends computer. I ran all of the above, AVG wouldn't update, Avast wouldn't catch anything yet we knew something was there.

I simply pulled the drive, popped it in my own machine as a slave and my copy of AVG caught the three little nastys causing the problem. They had got in via spyware (A one called 'windows' believe it or not! There is one called that and it has nothing to do with microsoft windows before the jokes start! :p). Anyway, cleaned it up, pulled the drive back out of my own machine, switched it back to master, re-installed it to my friends and everything updated fine.

You'll generally find that internet exporer home page generally keeps getting reset often as not but not all the time.

Easiest way is to slave the drive if you can and then scan it for virus's and spyware. I have a spare 4 gig drive which I know is 100% clean I personally use for this. You can get them for nothing these days. I use this once a month to do the above to make sure everything is ok. No anti virus is 100% though some are way better than others but they can still be beaten. The same go's for firewalls, they can be beaten. Only way to know for sure if a drive is perfectly clean is by slaving it and then scanning it.

    :)

I've had that problem before, I kept getting the out of date message and no matter what I did it would not go away. In the end it was a complete de-install with a registry cleanout and a fresh install that did the trick (smeggle's option3 below). Annoying I know but when the product is free you can't complain.....
Do a complete scan first just in case Grisoft is infected - doubtful but just in case!

If it's causing so much ****, surely uninstall/reinstall the whole thing.
