The sugar sandwich topic reminded me of this. Practically lived on it as a child. Hot milk, bread and a bit of sugar. I remember it was mentioned in the book Angelas Ashes (and they used water and sugar when they didn't have milk) at some point.

I remember my little brother being fed this when he was small. And, though I can't remember it myself, I'm sure myself and my younger sister were probably fed it as well at some stage too. I think nearly all Irish children would have eaten this concoction at some point growing up! :D

Come to think of it, my grandmother still eats this herself now and again cos she loves it.

I worked in as a nurse in a major dublin psychiatric hospital working with people with a learning disability in the '90s and for those poor unfortunate elderly patients with not a lot in the tooth dept. they would get "goody" for dessert, it was cake, biscuits, hot sweet tea or ,milk all stirred up in a big bowl then dished out in smaller ones, often fed to them.
A lot of old practices survived 'til recently there. I think it was due to the no. of quite old residents and an aged staff, many from the rural areas of the country. Institutionalisation resulted in a reluctance to change for both staff and patients over the years so it was a little like going through a time warp working there.

Yeah Goody, Yummy yummy yum yum. :)

You could put raisins in it also and it became another supper treat.

Ah that was such a treat. Mam would make a big pot of it and me and my brothers would sit on the floor with spoon and devour it. No time for smaller bowls, there was goody to be eaten :D

Can you explain - did you stir the sugar into the hot milk then dip the bread into it?

    Bleurgh!!!

The way we used to do it was to butter a slice of bread (skull, wellington, or basket but not sliced pan) then tear it up and put it in a cup. Sugar went in on top, then some tea and milk. It was good but I only got it when I was sick. Simpler times.

My granny made it all the time along with bread pudding and egg custard.

We were posh, we had gruel. A watery sugary porridge mixture.

Goody - yum as a child I loved it - it was real comfort food.
My mam made it with white bread torn in chunks and placed in a large mug, boiling water was added, give it a few stirs, drain out water, add cold milk and sugar - couple more stirs, and there you have Goody!

Oh yum, I remember goody. We had it if we were ill. I thought it was a real "country" thing.

My husband, who is a Dub, is looking for the recipe for "egg flip" which was his comfort food from childhood.
