I installed an new hard drive in my PC last night (not boot drive). Everything was working fine. Then this evening I switched it on and it wouldn't boot up. It switches on as usual, can hear the fans and drives etc, but thats as far as it gets. It doesn't beep and theres no signal sent to the monitor. I thought maybe the PSU was overloaded, but i've plugged out a few extra drives and it still wont boot. Theres a fair bit of hardware installed, it's a 450w PSU. Could it be fried?

Is it possible the video card has come loose? Try taking it out reseating it back in tight. If you arent getting any signal to the monitor at all and no beeps it's likely that would be the issue.

most video cards would give a warning, though it is worth checking that you didn't knock something loose, also reset the bios, reseat ram/cpu and if all of the above fail try to get your hands on another psu to check it against

Checked the graphics card and ram alright. Although IIRC it'll beep if theres something wrong with either of those. Don't have any thermal paste atm, so don't want to remove the cpu. Can't see how it'd have come loose anyway.

Similar thing happened to me a while back. Mother board was fried I'm sorry to say.
However it was nothing to do with installing second drive. Is it possibly dust somewhere?

you'll find an answer on http://www.virtualdr.com/ for sure

Was planing a major overhaul soon so maybe this is the excuse I need. I'd still prefer to know which component is at fault though, and I don't really have much time to be pullin it apart testing each component.

Have you got another AGP or PCI Express Graphics card lying around that you can try it.. Atleast then you can distingusih the problem. If the PC still doesnt boot up with the replacement GFX card, Then its 90% probably the Motherboard. What Are the Spec's of youre machine anyway, Its always handy to know.

    Thanks,

    Hj
