  • It's free but not wireless. You are obliged to attend a 'network clinic' with your laptop, in Trinity or in halls, during which they change all the settings on your computer and give you a cable to use to connect to the net. You definitely need Windows XP Pro, I'm sure you could get a copy or something. No idea about downloading large files, I've downloaded some pretty big stuff and been fine. P2P is not allowed. No Kazaa or anything like that, but last year there was some thing going where students could share files with each other. I believe IS Services turned a blind eye.

if you know you're **** about computers and apply and tell them you run linux, they will just give you ure mac address and cable(if needed) and you can do everything yourself. works fine on windows too as long as you can set it up yourself.
If you don't want to attend a 2 hour computer lab of boring **** and know how to set your computer up, tell them you run linux, iss will run scared and let you do it yourself, that is all :)

they didn't turn a blind eye, they just didn't know about most people's set ups
I know about at least 3 groups of people that used outside servers to download stuff then use normal http to download it onto their computers.
Of course there will always be the idiots who straight up try to use p2p stuff and get told off about it!
