what mouse?(name model, if it doesn't have name and model, then is it an optical one or a ball one?) using USB or ps/2?

If its a ball mouse, try cleaning it.

Define "erratically"...is it only in certain windwos/applications? Stuttering, slowing down speeding up?

No, but really, aint worth the hassle, plug in another mouse, if it works fine throw the old away.

    or maybe...
    just maybe...

    Your connector is broken ?

Its a mouse, theres fa that can go wrong with it software-wise. Either the mouse is broken or your motherboard is broken.

Even windows isn't going to set up new hardware in conflict with the mouse.
Did you go messing around with IRQs and stuff for some other hardware ?

    If so thats your problem.

Is it a usb mouse? Try a different USB port? Otherwise buy a USB mouse if your computer has USB ports (likely). Cheap as chips. Once you go optical, there's no going back. I still slag my wife over the double movement thing she does (which you need to do to compensate for dirty rollerball mice). Brilliant.

i put in a usb mouse and it is working better-but not perfect- i think the problem started when i downloaded a program Dscaler which is software programme for tv etc- i have removed the program and can find no trace of it in the registry.
thanks again for all the replies

Try your mouse settings...some utility packages use Acceleration that moves the pointer faster incrementally, but there are tick boxes that stop it working in full screen apps (like games or movies)....try all the different settings in there and see if that chnges anything.
