National Road Network

I emailed the NRA a couple of days ago, about the possibility of a motorway network linking Galway - Limerick - Cork - Waterford as a means to facilitate greater employment creation in the regional capitals. Below is the reply I received.

Thank you for your email of 7th September 2005 regarding the national road
    network.

The National Road Needs Study, which was published by the Authority in 1998,
intended to assess national road investment needs to identify the type of road
(i.e. motorway, dual carriageway) that would be appropriate for each segment of
the national road system so as to cater for projected traffic flows over a 20
    year period (i.e. 2000-2019).

The National Road Needs Study represented only one input into the National
Development Plan (NDP), 2000-2006 and Government policy for the improvement of
national roads, as outlined in the NDP, provides for the development of the five
major inter-urban routes (Dublin to the Border, Dublin to Galway, Dublin to
Cork, Dublin to Limerick, Dublin to Waterford) to motorway /high quality dual
carriageway standard and a programme of major improvement works on many other
national primary routes, which include the routes you mention , i.e. N18, N20
    and N25.

I hope that the above information is of assistance to you.

    That doesn't tell us much.

Personally i think they should have put in a Motorway from Dublin to Limerick (it would be well fininshed by now) and then your suggested Motorway.

Would be fininshed at this stage and also re balanced regional development

    But What's done is done

I aslo e.mailed them a long time ago to see if they had any plans for Newland's Cross as it seems ridiculous that you could drive the whole way from belfast to Portlaoise without interuption except for one set of lights that would cause havock
