forgive me if this is a really stoopid question but is it possible to convert divx/xvid video files into mp4 (or whatever the hell the psp plays)?

Technically, divx is mpeg4.

unless i'm being especially dumb that looks like dvd to psp video format (mp4)....

i have existing tv series in xvid on my computer that i wanna watch on my psp....do they need to be converted or will the psp play them off the bat

yeah i've got that but since i'm waiting on 1gig stick i haven't been able to try it out yet.

Since i've only got the 32meg card that came with it, i've been looking for a small xvid file on my comp to convert and try out but i don't have any so i haven't been able to try that out either.

Why not use Virtual Dub to make a small DivX or split off a few seconds of video from a tv show and convert it to see if it works?

tbh, the thought never occured to me....getting too tired and my lumines addiction is doing my head in....i'll do it later when i'm at me desktop.

Tbh, the only reason i got the psp is to watch movies/tv shows (and play the odd game) when i travel. I hate commuting, so anything to pass the time when i'm on a bus/dart is very much appreciated.

I sold my new 3g phone to get myself the bloody thing and so far it has lived up to expectations

Dunno whether to get a PSP or an iRiver at the moment. Hopefully I'll be buying one soon.

well a psp and agig stick (think 2gig sicks are out soon) is a reasonable mp3 player.....except for the psp being a little bit too big and heavy to be overly convenient. but thats 255 for psp and 80-90 for memory stick :eek:

It does come with some head phones with a remote control on the wire....

And it's about €340 or so for the iRiver H340. 40 gigs of movies and music... No games though.

tbh i know sfa about the iriver but i would hazard a guess that the screen on the psp is slightly better

just curious though, is there any way to reduce the size of video files when converting them?

It should reduce the size of the files.... I dont have it installed on this PC so I cant go into detail. But check the settings. You can lower the audio quality and video without any noticeable drop in quality.

I got family guy down from 180 megs to 31, at which point the poorer quality is actually noticeable

. Saying that it's watchable if you're desperate for space. At 70megs the audio/video is perfect.

yeah there are a heap of settings and its a piece of piss. i reduced a 6gig dvd to a 677mb mp4 file......sweet as!!!

What settings did you use and how long does it take to convert a 6gig movie (after ripping of course) ? I'd reckon a couple of hours at least.

QB4 level.....slow as ****. took about 4hrs but then my auld machine is struggling a bit these days.....

I use PSPware for the Mac and it dropped a 3gb movie to around 470mb (default settings) - took approx 2hrs which wasn't bad and was faster than ffmepeg...

I converted Terminator2 last night and got it down to around 480megs. After getting Se7en on UMD and being really impressed with the quality, I must say that I'm a little disappointed in the quality of the encoded T2 that I did, there's noticable bitmapping, but I suppose it's watchable.

how big is your stick? i reckon 700mb gets an almost perfect quality from a 7gig dvd

I have a 1gig stick. I'll try the QB4 encoding on Video9 tonight and see how things go.

tbh, maybe my standards (and/or eysesight) aren't the same as yours....
